Introduction, January 2016

Hello students and welcome to Counseling 120, College and Career Success! Take a look at my video introduction above.

This class is especially useful for those of you who want to understand yourself better and choose a major and career that matches your gifts and talents. The class also meets a general education requirement for transfer to state universities. If this is your first class in college, you are off to a good start. If you are a continuing student, there are some great benefits. You will become familiar with some new learning tools that will make your future education easier.

Since the course is online, you can do the work anytime or any place during the week. For best results, be sure to set aside time for working on this class each week and not wait until the last minute to do the work. I look forward to working with all of you this semester.

Please make 2 postings this week.  Each posting should be a minimum of 100 words.

1. For the first posting, introduce yourself by telling us about your interests, hobbies and what is important in your life, and maybe share a photo or video of yourself.  See my introduction below.

2.  As your second posting, tell us about your educational journey.  Where did you attend school before?  Why you are taking this class and what are your goals and dreams for the future? What is your current educational goal? See my educational journey below.

You can also comment on other students' postings.

Marsha Fralick’s Introduction
Here is an example of a 100 word introduction:

I am your professor for Counseling 120. I retired from Cuyamaca College where I worked from 1978-2007 as a counselor and instructor for this course. I play many roles in life. I am a Grandmother with 2 young granddaughters. I enjoy taking care of them frequently and watching them grow. My own children are grown up and have their own careers and homes. I have my own business and work with colleges across the country in training faculty to teach college success courses.  I am also the author of your textbook.  In my leisure time I enjoy traveling and being active.

Marsha Fralick’s Educational Journey

Here is an example of a 100 word posting.

I attended a small country high school in New Mexico and was a good student. When I went to the University of New Mexico, I found that it was a whole new world and I was not prepared for it. I struggled to be successful in college and had to learn how to listen to lectures, take notes and prepare for exams. I also had uncertain career goals. When I started working at a college, I remembered those years that I struggled and decided to invent a course that would help students to be successful. It has been a fun and rewarding adventure for the last 33 years.

  1. Good afternoon,
My name is Ashley Crawley I'm 23 years old. I'm new to San Diego and I enjoy music and traveling. My current hobby is learning how to play the guitar. This is something I have been wanting to do for years and I'm finally getting to it. I also love spending time with my children teaching them new things and watching them pick up new skills and talents. What matters to me most Is that I set a great example for my kids to see and show them that anything is possible if you set your mind to it and have a vision.

  2. Hello again it's me Ashley Crawley. As you know I'm 23. What you do not know is I'm 23 with 4 kids and a husband I have been married to for 4 years. With that being said college has not come easy for me. As a high school student I was a great student. I tested up as a sophomore to become a senior. I attended Madera high for my first two years of high school before testing up. Once I tested up I attended homeschool. I graduated with a 3.5 gpa on May 29 2009 at the age of 16. College was never pushed in my household so once I finished high school I didn't leave to college. After having a break with no school I decide to go back after I got married at the age of 18. I found out I was pregnant with twins shortly after getting married so school was pushed backed once again. I have been pregnant twice after my twins which are now 4, I also have a 3 year old and a 6month old. I'm just now trying to get back in school after being out for some time. My career goal is to become a family and marriage counselor and ton help marriages and family thrive to be great. This is my first time doing online classes so I'm excited for the journey. My goal is to finish this semester with at least a 3.5 GPA. With discipline I know it possible but I will be hard work having 4 kids at home and working online, but I know it's possible.

  3. Good Afternoon ,
My name is Omar Alvarez. Im 20 years old. I'm one of 3 sons ( a 27 year old sister and a twin). I'm from Tijuana ,Mexico (not that far from here), so i moved to San Diego on September 2014. Im passionate about technology. My current hobby ( that is slowly turning into sort of a life style ) is triathlon. I like to learn about new things and discuss and analize those things rationally.
I came to this country to live the "American Dream" and have a better life quiality .Im really excited to experiment the "College Life" and delevope my skills to become a great member of today's society.

  4. Is Omar Alvarez again. I finished high school in Mexico before moving to California ( a couple of month before to be precise). I didn't start College right away because of my residential status. I needed to be at least one year old resident to clear the pre-requisites of Cuyamaca College and that happened on October of 2015. Unfortanetly the semester had already started so i had to wait to Spring 2016 , so here I am. The future i'm planing for my college/ Universty is to finish College at Cuyamaca and then be transfered to San Diego State University for the Degree. My Dream Career is Computer Networking. Im exicted about this journey( because is a new phase in my life in general ) and yet a little nervous because this is my first semester in a new country i barely know culturally, and even if the english language is not an issue, i have to practice it more frequently. But im not the first and the last foreign student so...What stops me to success?

  7. My name is Maria Menchaca. I was born and raised in San Diego. I am one of twelve kids. I am one of the middle children and I am probably the most driven. I absolutely adore being around children and I probably get along better with them than I do someone my own age. I am a former foster youth and have recently got back into touch with my family. I enjoy reading and making jewelry. I'm also a movie buff and enjoy a science fiction or action movie before I'll watch a romance movie.

I graduated with honors. I have been at Cuyamaca College for a couple semesters. I plan on transferring to Cal State San Marcos. I am working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology. After that, I plan on getting my Master's in Medical Social Work. I hope to work in the hospital and somehow be able to incorporate my work with young children.

  9. Hello, my name is Brandon Dally. I am 22 years old, born and raised in San Diego. I come from a family of 2, my younger brother and I, the oldest of course! I grew up in El cajon. It is a pretty big town but when you live in it for 17 years you practically know everyone. My father has a pizza restaurant there called franco's pizza, now owned by him for 29 years and current. I help him till today and thats been about 10 years. I love spending time with my family and friends. I've always had a hobby of swimming. Growing up and experiencing the real world gave me an interest in traveling and seeing mother nature for itself. Whats most important in my life is to be successful, and not love what I do. It's to do what I love.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I attended grade school in in El cajon, at least elementary and middle school. I graduated high school from Steele Canyon on 2012, located in Spring Valley/Rancho San Diego for those of you who are familiar. This is my fourth year at grossmont now due to changing my major a couple of times and being depended on with the restaurant, working lots of hours. That has changed now. I help once a week and work twice a week at Sharp grossmont as a certified nursing assistant. I have made my educational goal into Nursing so I am getting wonderful experience now. I am taking this class out of the options I had because I knew that I would learn more about success and motivation and how to better myself. This class is also a requirement for me to graduate this semester. My educational plan is to attend nursing school, get my bachelor's in nursing and become a Nurse Practitioner. I would like to do assignments with nursing throughout all the states so that I can travel and see the world!!!

  12. Hi everyone! My name is Cynthia Romero, I am 26 years old. I am a mother to a beautiful 2 year-old and I am currently expecting another child early July. I transitioned from being a banker of five years to a stay-at-home mother which was a huge adjustment. I enjoy spending my down time (if I have any) watching movies, reading and hiking. I also enjoy exploring new things with my son. It is important to me to see my child grow and learn. To have him know that nothing in life is impossible. In addition to learning and growing myself.

I graduated Mount Miguel High School in 2007. After high school I decided not to attend college because of the job I had. I got used to making money but then figured out that without a college education, I would be stuck at the position I was in. Here I am, nine years later pursuing a degree in Business Management. I hope to enter into a career within human resources. I know it will be a struggle to finish, being I am a mother. But I am motivated to get my degree and to get a career for my family and myself.

  14. My name is Hannah Dupre. I am 19 years old, and some of my favorite hobbies are reading, sports, and being with friends. My interests in books is mostly on mythical or fictional stories. When reading a book, it feels like watching a movie in my head. I also have a passion for animals, they are a huge stress reliever and great companions. Just by spending time with my pets, or even someone else's pet, they boost my mood. My education, friends, and family are very important to me. My education increases my learning experience, my friends improve it, and it's always nice to have my family support me.

  15. I went to Valhalla High School and graduated 2014. I came to Cuyamaca last year, and plan to transfer into a university after next school year in 2017. I'm taking this class because I need it for a requirement to transfer, but also because I barely know what I want to do with my future education and for a career. I am leaning towards a major involving mathematics, like engineering, because it's what I'm good at. I hope in this class that I will become more confident in my abilities as a student and become more confident in the decisions I make that are important to me.

I lived in Coronado for eight years and graduated from Coronado High School in 2015. I played Varsity Golf in high school and currently play on the Cuyamaca Women’s Golf team. I like to play golf because its an individual game and unlike every other sport the ‘arena’ is never the same, even if you play at the same golf course because the conditions are never the same any given day. I also like to travel and when I do I enjoy embracing the culture of the place that I am visiting.

Most important things to me in my life would be my family and the love and passion I have for basketball. I do not play basketball anymore as a competitive sport, but I still am in love with the sport and will play it whenever I have the time. Well, I spend most of my time with my friends and family and enjoy every last second of it. Ive been living in San Diego all my life and hopefully I have no plans of moving out of this beautiful city. I also want to add that when I attended ECVHS, we ended up becoming the first league champions in that schools history and I'm very glad to be apart of that. I'm looking forward to this class and I'm really hoping that this class will help me out in the long run.

I enjoyed learning in high school and hopefully college will just as exciting as it was when I first entered college. I didn't really struggle in high school because I thought high school was pretty easy. I did manage to fail geometry because the teacher was just horrible and I honestly could not understand anything she would say or explain. I did manage to make that class up my junior year and ended up passing it with an A. I did end up graduation and was the first in my family to do so which I'm proud of. Hopefully I can take my knowledge and use it here in college and hopefully succeed. I wish you all luck this semester and lets all just have fun. Good luck everyone.

  42. Hello
I have a long educational journey, I studied in Iraq, I was a teacher for an elementary school, I was teaching math and Arabic.
When I arrived here, I started thinking about how to learn English, so I went to schools that teach ESL, but they weren't helpful for me so I decided to go to college so I can extend my education and maybe majoring in something I would like. My current educational goal is to improve my language and be better because I feel like if I don't know how to speak, then I will not be able to understand the world and the people around me.

My name is Wafaa Hermiz, I am from Baghdad, Iraq. I moved to the U.S three years ago. I don't have any interests that I would like to share because I spend my days at home doing house work and I go to college two days a week. I might love cooking and watching Indian TV shows, but they are part of my life, not an interest. The most important thing in my life is to improve my language and be successful in my life. I'm still learning and I still have a lot to do, but I will never give up.

I studied in Iraq, I graduated from the high school in 1981. after I finished my high school, I work at the bank as an accounter. My educational journey is so short because since I had my first child, I quit and started my regular life.
When I came to the united states, I found that the language is so difficult and I didn't know what to do to improve it, so I decided to attend the college and learn step by step. I'm taking this class because I heard that it will improve me to become better and it will help me in the future. My future goal is to improve my language and study accounting.

  45. Hello everyone! My name is Hannah Padilla, I am 18 years old and have lived in San Diego my whole life, very blessed I know. I am a full time student and work 4-5 days a week at Nordstrom in La Jolla in the Active department. I am really into health and fitness, I've been a vegetarian for about 6 years and have attempted a multitude of sports, but I dedicated 12 years to soccer and 4 years to track and field. Some things that I love are my family and friends, my house in Mexico, the beach, good coffee, shoes, meaningful books and inspirational quotes. I like to think of myself as an outgoing and sociable person, but I am definitely a realist which can be both a positive and negative thing. I've heard really good things about what one can personally take away from this class so I am excited to be apart of it.

  46. In terms of my educational career path, I attended a private catholic school in La Mesa called St Martin of Tours from pre school-8th grade, afterwards I attended Steele Canyon High School, which was definitely a culture shock but I loved it! I graduated this past year and was really involved, through sports, clubs, leadership programs and AP classes. My favorites being AP US History, AP Government and AP English Language. Science and math have never been my strong suits, but I still manage to do well in the classes when I keep up with all the work. Financially, it was the best decision to attend a junior college first but I hope to transfer as soon as possible to either UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Berkely or Cal Poly Slo. I am currently majoring in Communication and want to minor in Marketing, but I am also considering a Marketing major and Poly Sci minor. We will see! :)

I have hemi-paralysis resulting from a childhood stroke that has influenced my interest and life choices. For instance I have a deep fascination in medicine. I enjoy staying up to date with scientific discoveries that can improve modern medicine. Aside from my interest in science I enjoy reading, drawing and painting. I have taken art classes all for years of high school and my artistic abilities have grown each year. When I’m not studying or creating art I like to spend my down time volunteering at a retirement home and babysitting my 16 month old nephew.

  56. Hello Richard again, I spent my high school days at Mount Miguel High School where I graduated in 2014. I originally attended college at California State University Eastbay in Hayward California where I majored in Health Science. Unfortunately I did not find this university to be a good fit so after completing my first year I decided to move back home and attend school at Grossmont College where I plan to transfer to San Diego State to continue studying Health Science with a minor in literature. After attaining my degree I plan to enroll in a physician assistant program and later down the line attend med school to achieve my childhood dream of becoming a pediatrician. Lastly I am taking this class because it was highly recommended by a few friends who said it helped motivate them in continuing their education when they were in a bit of a slump.

  89. I am Riman Hirmiz. Iraq is my hometown but I spend the same amount of yeas in Holland as much. Both countries left a mark in my life and a moment in my heart that I will never forget because they have two different cultures and I gain a wonderful experience from both cultures. My major is business and I enjoy all business classes I take because I wish I ever have any kind of job in this sector. My hobby is drawing when I have mood and time and walking. My goal is to graduate from Grossmont College with high grades and to learn as much as I can so I will be prepared for work. I wish you all a good luck with every steps you take.

  90. It’s me again Riman Hirmiz. I studied High school in Iraq and I also studied some courses in Holland. I finished business secretary and financial administration course. I always wanted to learn a lot about the most sides of business because I find it a broad world and very important sector in this life. I admire any business person who succeed in business. I am taking this class, in the beginning I took it because it was required but when I read the syllabus, I found out that it could be the way that lead me to know exactly which business I can specify and focus on it.

  91. As for me, Justin Goro I am just going to school at Cuyamaca to get my General Ed classes done with then I wish to transfer to UCSD or SDSU to major in civil engineering, I might get my masters but I am unsure about that at the moment so I will not make any comments on that yet. My goal is to transfer out of Cuyamaca within 2 years, I believe this is possible if I start going to school full time, and not work so much. I plan to be done with school by the time I turn 25.

  92. Again, for me Justin Goro, I have road blocks just like everyone else does, mine are just work, and some friends that tend to distract me from school. Like I said earlier I work full time, so it does make it hard for me wanting to come full to school because I dont want to overwhelm myself with everything and start to slack in either work, school, or maybe even both. Each semester i am adding an extra class to my schedule, easing into full time, so I am more comfortable with my schedule, instead of going all out at one time and then regretting it later because I realize it was too much to handle and do good at the same time. For myself, my goals is to have at least a 3.6 GPA when I transfer and I believe that that is easily achievable. In addition once I transfer colleges I will cut my hours from work a lot, or maybe even stop working so I can focus on school a lot more.

  93. Hi! My name is Alexis and I am nineteen years old. I graduated from West Hills in 2014. I am an accounting student at Grossmont and this is my first class at Cuyamaca. I'm hoping to transfer to state after next year. I love traveling (going to Australia in June), concerts, the beach, working out, hiking, cooking, and finding great restaurants. I hate sitting home and wasting a day so I'm usually always out doing something. I am the oldest child of three and help my mom take care of my two autistic and special needs siblings, Alex and Kyla.

  94. I'm taking this class because this course covers a lot of topics I need help with like time management and studying methods. It also fulfills one of the requirements for transferring to state. This is my fourth semester in college and I graduated from West Hills High School in 2014. My goals and dreams for the future is to ultimately be happy with my career, marriage, and lifestyle. I want to be financially stable and be able to support my family. I have 10 classes left after this semester so I hope to finish it all in 2 semesters and transfer to a college near here. My first pick would be state, but if not I just want to remain in San Diego.

  97. Hello my name is sahar polus, I’m 40 years old, I’m from Baghdad, Iraq. I’m a student at Cuymaca College. I moved to San Diego in 2012-2013 with my family for about four years ago and I decided to study. I am very passionate at teaching little kids, I would either be a babysitter or an elementary school teacher or both. I have many hobbies, I’m a sociable person I love discussing new stuff and knowing about everything that s surrounding me. I came to the United States to live a better life and be able to study, because you know it’s not safe in Iraq and you can’t go to school because you could’ve get killed so the best decision was to leave the country and migrate to find a better and safer life here.

  101. Hello Everyone !

I am Riman Hirmiz. I am a mother of two twins and a girl. I have been married for 20 years . I was born and raised in Iraq, and lived in iraq for 20 years than moved to the Netherlands for 20 years now I am in the United States for almost 6 years . I have finished and graduated with my Bachelor's degree in Iraq. I continued college in Holland and as well graduated but America would not accept it, that's why I am starting school over again. My career goal is business. And to end up opening my own business. I want to tranfer to SDSU. As well according to this assignment for this week I am an extravert type of person. Meaning that I am a social person around people. I like to meet new people, learn from different cultures and collect new ideas, in a new perspective way. I am an open minded person that understands other people’s feelings, how they speak and how to accept things when the person is not in the mood. I am not a hard-headed person. I like to share opinions, and discuss about them. I like variety. I like a variety of things, I usually don’t like to stick with one thing. I like to change my mind and see or do something different. Even if it goes wrong, I incredibly encourage someone to fail and learn from variety than to not try and say I should have tried. I also like to explore variety of places in the world and learn new ways to learn things.
