Chapter 12, Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle, April 25-May 1



Chapter 12 contains health information for college students in the areas of nutrition, avoiding addictions, protection from disease, getting enough sleep and dealing with stress. It is based on the premise that we will be living longer in the 21st Century. Also a college education is a big investment, and it is important to enjoy the benefits over a long lifetime.

Here are some ideas for discussion. You can also add any topic related to health or college and career success. You can make one comment of 200 words or two comments of 100 words each.

These facts are well known: 

•         Smoking causes lung cancer.
•         One out of three Americans is overweight or obese.
•         Illegal drug use is addictive and limits success.
•         Not getting enough sleep is harmful to health and learning.
•         Not practicing monogamous or safe sex can lead to STD’s including AIDS.

Knowing this information, why do people continue to smoke, overeat, take illegal drugs, miss out on sleep, or practice unsafe sex?

  1. Knowing the facts that we do about healthy lifestyles doesn't keep us from practicing all the precautions that we should because many of us don't think it will happen to us. Many people will try drugs and/or smoking becuase they don't feel like they will get addicted to the drugs or the nicotine in cigarettes. Some people will use drugs in order to forget their problems or numb the pain in their life. Many people overeat due to the fact that they still feel hungry, in all actuality it could be that they need to drink water because they are dehydrated. The pains you feel for these two things are very similar. Not getting enough sleep is common but many times, we all feel like we could function off of little to no sleep. As for not practicing safe sex, many people, it seems practice a "don't ask, don't tell" policy. If your partner doesn't tell you if they have an STD, then they don't; which is definitely not the case. Another thing is people just listen to the excuses of why a condom isn't necessary during their sexual activities. I find this to be decreasing in numbers but it is still common.

  2. If I assumed that I am writing a magazine article titled , "The Five Most Important Steps to Maintaining Your Good Health." What ideas would I include in this article? The first idea I would include in this article is that the importance of getting enough hours of sleep every night. For example, researches show that adults who sleep 7-9 hours a night tend to be in a better mode and concentrate and remember much more things and be in a better health than those who sleep less than 7 hours. The second thing I would include in this article is the importance of eating fruits and vegetables everyday. A lot of people are not very friendly with eating fruits and vegetables, but they are very important to the body, brain and the health as well. The third thing I would include in this article is the importance of eating less fast food, and eating more of home cooked food. People can not trust fast food no matter how good the food tastes or looks. Cooking food at home is a lot more safer and healthier. The fourth thing I would include in this article is the importance of exercising everyday to maintain a good health. The fifth thing I would include in this article would be to keep myself motivated all the times by getting with a group of people and remind myself how important our health is.

The video I chose is "How to Make Stress Your Friend" and I learned things I never knew from watching this video such as stressing a lot in general has a 43% to enhance dying that is only if the person believes and views their stress as life threatening. However, if a person has lots of stress but simply does not believe it can harm them or lead to death then it has no harm. It is when the person believes it is harmful that stress becomes harmful to them. Oxytocin is an important hormone when it comes to the subject about stress because it is a stress hormone and usually when you talk to someone about stress whether you are seeking help about it or helping the person you are talking to about it, it releases oxytocin which makes your stress response healthier and you actually recover from the stress when that happens without you even knowing it. Also people who showed caring for others showed zero stress that was related to dying because caring for someone created resilience. The idea of this video was basically that how you think and act is a major part of how stress can affect you.

  5. Share some of your intention statements for maintaining your good health.
    The very first thing I am going to do to maintain or start my good health is my mindset; I want to have a positive mindset when doing this. Having positive mindset changes things in ways one may not see until it hits him/her in the face. I want to make sure I get more than enough hours of sleep when I am ready to go to bed at night. Getting enough sleep makes sure that when you wake up you have a good start to your day; you’re not tired or dreading to wake up. I also want to make sure the breakfast is the very first thing on my mind when I wake up. Eating a breakfast, a healthy one at that gets the brain started and insures the you’re ready to think and start your day and ready to face whatever comes your way. Exercise is a big one! Making sure your body has enough exercise throughout the day insures that you will be in shape and you’re doing what you need to do to live a healthy lifestyle. Managing what I eat will be the next big thing in my change to a good and healthy lifestyle. Watching how much sugar my body intakes and making sure I get more than enough fruits and vegetables in my body daily. I will be more than consistent with these steps for maintaining my good healthy lifestyles.

    To improve my health I intend to exercise vigorously. I make sure my body has enough exercise throughout the day insures that I will be in shape and I’m doing what I need to do to live a healthy lifestyle. I make sure I get enough hours of sleep because getting enough sleep makes me have a good start to my day; am not tired or dreading to wake up and have a lot of energy. In order to maintain a good Health, my meal should include vegetables and fruits, grains and protein, because that would help me have a healthy and long life. I intend to improve my health by being as stress free as possible and always think about things that makes me happy. I intend to improve my health by engaging myself in hobbies that I enjoy like watching movies that I like, go shopping with my friends, read books, and watch my favorite TV shows with family. Finally, I intend to improve my health by not taking any drugs or drinking any alcohol; because they will affect my health and cause me diseases that will end up my life.

When writing an article in the magazine "The five most important steps to maintain your good health" is the first to think of nutrition ideal and it is best that these plant foods are and that covers two-thirds of the dinner plate of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and the use of meat and dairy in moderation, as well as the use of fats and sweets also moderately . Second, reduce drinking soft drinks that cause obesity. Third, maintain your health through physical activity every day and regularly because it helps in weight management and protects the body from disease, and maintains bone health, and promote psychological well-being of depression and anxiety. Fourthly get some rest during sleep and relax, because the lack of sleep increases the speed of aging and the body is less vigor and vitality. Fifth stay away from drinking alcohol, because it is a major factor in HIV infection, as well as lead to memory loss and neurological problems, drinking alcohol reduces 10 years of age of the person, as well as cause a lot of road accidents, thus causing death. So if we follow these steps well and regularly has to be that we get good health.

  9. I have to write about eating. because American is constantly criticizing people for being obese but they are constantly shoving food in our face and down our throats. It is very hard to say no to bad foods when they are constantly at your finger tips however, we have to have the strength and discipline to say no. one way to get over obesity and loose the weight is by saying no to unhealthy foods. instead of going to the fast food restaurant eat at home. if you believe it is fast then think of food that yea can eat at home that are quick healthy meals like Pb&j or tuna and if that doesn't work for you then i would suggest meal preparing. i know that sounds like a lot of work but it better for you and you can cook once a week all your food for week. that is a steal. the other thing is finding time to workout. this dosent have to be a 3hour workout 5 times a week at the best gym in the town. you can simply walk the block a couple times or Youtube a few workout videos from home and do those. dont put more then can do on your plate because you will burn out quick. i suggest starting off small and adding a little more at time. even with healthy eating dont tell yourself your on a diet just start to add more healthy food to your daily routine and before you know it you will be eating better.

  10. sleep to remember remember to sleep
    man this is the struggle of my life. having no sleep has really played a huge part in my memory. before i had kids my sleep was better and my memory was a whole lot better. know i feel like i have never ending pregnancy brain because of having no sleep. it is good to know why my memory is lacking and i must be more intentional about more and better sleep at night.

  11. Assume that you are writing magazine article, "The Five Most Important Steps to Maintaining Your Good Health." What ideas would you include in this article?
    My first step would be acknowledging how you eat. If your eating habits are unhealthy with nothing but junk food, sodas, and candy and then ask yourself if this is how you want to live for the rest of your life? Once you tell yourself you want to change to live a longer life and you are ready for the challenge for yourself or family to eating healthy. My second step would be getting rid of all junk food, sodas, candy and once you have thrown those out fill your refrigerator with fruits like apples, bananas, blueberries, vegetables like broccoli, carrots, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, etc. and have fish, turkey, and chicken. Doing meal preps will also make it easy for you and the family. It will be a start to living and maintaining a healthy life. Third step will be exercising. Exercising will not only keep you fit, or lose weight but will give you more energy and keep you focused on goals that you are wanting to achieve. Being physically active will get your body into a routine. Fourth step will be family. Family is an important step because when you get your family into eating healthy and staying active your children will be active and not lazy. Children seeing there parents exercising and eating healthy will stay with them when they get older and continue to maintain and live a healthy life. Last step I would put is not to be stressed out. Learning to be stress free or make stress your friend will make your life so much easier. Laughing and letting lose with family and friends creates happiness and love with no negative tension or feelings towards anything or anybody in any situation. Following these steps will have you maintain a good healthy life.

    There is no "magic bullet" when it comes to nutrition. Short-term diets may help you lose weight, but they are hard to keep up and may even be unhealthy in the long run.
    Good nutrition doesn't come in a vitamin pill. Only take a vitamin with your doctor's recommendation, as your body benefits the most from eating healthy, whole foods.
    Eating a variety of foods is best for your body, so try new foods!
    Stories from people who have used a diet program or product, especially in commercials and infomercials, are advertisements. These people are usually paid to endorse what the advertisement is selling. Remember, regained weight or other problems that develop after someone has completed the program are never talked about in those ads.
    The more we eat healthy, the less natural it feels to reach for a piece of cookie or a bag of chips when we get hungry. It is then not a matter of depriving ourselves or forcing ourselves, but simply a conscious recognition of respecting what feels the best for our body in the long-term run.
    When we eat healthy, we physically feel good. We mentally have more energy to do the things that matter. When we are both globally conscious and personally healthy in our eating choices, we are contributing to the welfare of the planet. Our decision to practice healthy eating habits has so many consequences in so many ways.

  13. Why do people continue to smoke, overeat, take illegal drugs, miss out on sleep, or practice unsafe sex?

    Wherever you see (billboards, magazines, TV), there are disclaimers about secondary effects of using drugs or participating in activities; but those disclaimers are not strong enough to contrast the pros and cons of such products ( alcohol, tobacco) or activities (unsafe sex). People who are drinkers, for example, are bombarded with a lot of ads that relates alcohol with successful life, when in reality, statistics show otherwise. Companies put disclaimers on their products , but those disclaimers aren't very accurate with reality. It looks like those companies put the disclaimers on the products they sell because they're forced , and not because they care about the consumers. They know if they state very clear the pro and cons about the products people will be dubious about paying for such products or activities, which in the end will result in less profit for the company.
    Another factor is that people don't care about their health anymore. They live by the day and don't plan for the future ; their attitude toward health issues and life expectancy is mediocre and conformist. They live in a utopia instead of realizing the world we live in has pros and cons.

    To improve my health, there are some ideas and some statements to make my health better than now. For example, Eating vegetables always and everyday. Eating food which has many proteins and organic food. Also, I intend to eat breakfast everyday which contend boiled egg with cup of milk because it's good for my body and for my health. In addition, making exercises at least one hour a day. Also, thinking positively and continue my day without being angry and be happy all the time. Getting enough sleep everyday is the most important thing to keep my health good and never get tired. For example, I have to sleep 7 or 8 hours at night to get ready in the morning and being active all the day. Also, drinking a lot of juices like orange juice or apple juice and any juices which have vitamins. Also, try to maintaining my weight and don't loss or gain more wight. In addition, reduce from drinking sodas or a lot of coffee because it's not good for my health Also, reduce from salt in the food. Drinking a lot of water everyday. Using olive oil while cooking. Also, walking everyday at least two hours. Try to don't eat fast food. IN addition, going to the doctor at least every 6 months to check my body and visit the dentist every two months to check my teeth. Also, having the three meals regularly. Also , keep myself from cough when the weather is cold.So all of these things should improve my health, makes my body healthy, and makes my age longer.

    We all know the difference between right and wrong, but nobody chooses the right choice 100% of the time. If that was the case we would be living in a perfect world. I believe we choose the wrong over the right because we believe doing something wrong like smoke or overeat wont hurt us immediately and we do not think about our future as much as we should. We, as humans, tend to care about our peers more than ourselves most of the time. I have told many smokers tell me to never smoke and that people who smoke are idiots which is ironic. We want to protect our friends and family, but refuse to take our own advice sometimes. Other reason for drug use, in my opinion, is depression, anxiety and just people who are going through a rough time. People who are going through tough times tend to act in careless ways which would be drugs, overeating, unsafe sex, etc. The only category I fall under would be lack of sleep and that was caused by stress from school, which would be minimal stress compared to other people's stress i imagine. Overall I believe people choose to do wrong things because of stressful situations that makes them act in reckless behaviors.

    I believe that smoking does cause cancer. There are actually several ways that cigarettes can kill you. Second hand smoke, and smoking in general can kill you. I did not know that second hand smoking is more harmful than just smoking it yourself. I see a lot of programs, that try to inform youth, because there are many different things that influence young teens. Some people also are influenced by watching celebrities smoke, so they think it’s a good thing to do. Sometimes the fact that they are young and have friends that smoke, they think it’s cool, so they decide to smoke with their friends too. When you start smoking at a young age, it gives you more time to get addicted so it’s harder to stop. My uncle has smoked since he was 17 and is now 65 years old, he does not have any signs of cancer yet. Sometimes I think people that smoke believe that they won’t get cancer until its to late. Even though I have been informed of the dangers of smoking and have personally seen people get cancer, I still decide to smoke cigarettes. Personally I think everyone has the right to make their own choices, but there will always be consequences either negative or positive.

  18. Overweight result from an energy imbalance. The body needs a certain amount of energy calories from food to keep up basic life functions. Body weight remain the same when the number of calories eaten equals the number of calories burns. When people eat and drink more calories than they burn, the energy balance tips toward weight gain, overweight, and fat. There are many causes can lead to gain weight which include genetic element, eating habits, how and where people live, attitudes and emotions, life habits. Therefore, one of the best way to keep a good health is exercise and eating healthy food which means stop eating red meat and eating more variation food which include too much vegetable and fruit. This is what I try to do because once, I got heart attack. Actually I don’t eat too much red meat, and I do exercised but it looks I don’t do it regularly. I decided to stop eating red meat reduce bread and rice start exercising regularly. Therefore, we all can do it, even if we busy, 30 minutes can do lot. If we run for 10 minutes, and exercise for a half hour, in month we can notice big different. This can help us to live longer, look better, healthier, and sleep better.

    That is so true! I feel like parents need to try to change the way they have "dinner time." Like no fast foods, and healthy home cooked meals. Its sad that a lot of children don't even know what vegetables are, and I'm sure they wont even like them since they have never been introduced to them. the healthy problems caused by eating have become more and more severe, we really need to do something to solve the problem. the adults do need to talk to the children why we need to eat potatoes rather than french fries, and what should we eat to keep healthy. Also, I see most people are wondering to get fast food and eat the food so bad!!. To get good and healthy body with good brain, you should get food that has little bit of calories, so in this way you can avoid the bad food that around us. Children must eat healthy food unless they build good and healthy body

    In my opinion, I think people continue to smoke because there is always a way to quit smoking after they feel that their health is getting worse, it is just they can’t stop smoking, when I ask someone to quit smoking, he says I can’t because he addicted to it. Also the same thing happens when they over eat, take illegal drugs, miss out on sleep, or practice unsafe sex.
    I compare these things to like drinking a water or eat every day, will we be able to live if we stop drinking a water or stop eating? No, because if we will not eat or drink, we would definitely die and this is the same thing to the bad practices listed above, the people know that these bad habitis will lead to death, but they just don’t care because if they leave these habits or not, they will die anyways because their body is addicted to them.
    It is just depends on how the people think and what is their level of awareness and will they be able to leave these habits behind and live healthy? It is up to them.

  21. Smoking causes lung cancer

    After going over chapter twelve I understand the importance of how certain life stile choices will affect my life span. For example in this post I choose the topic “smoking cause lung cancer” because I used to smoke two years ago until I stopped. I decided to start smoking when I was eighteen to start experiencing with Tabaco around my friends. I understood that smoking could cause different types of cancers but I didn’t take it in consideration I would just do it for fun. Life style choices that I made are starting to catch up to me now. For example in my current job I am required to pass a respiratory test to be able to do confined space entries with the use of SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus) and every time I go to the health clinic they tell me I have lungs of a fifty year old. This automatically tells me that probably by the age of forty I will start having some reparatory problems. We all make decisions compulsive decisions in life and this was one that I regret doing. I exercise every day to maintain as healthy as possible while maintaining a balanced diet.

  22. If I were writing a magazine titled "Five Most Important Steps to Maintaining Your Good Health", I would add these five things... Sleep 8 hours a night, good nutrition, exercise, avoid smoking and avoid drinking. Sleep is very important, your brain needs rest to function properly. When people don't get enough sleep, their brain doesn't function properly which also leads to your body not functioning properly. Eating healthy is essential if you want a healthy body. Your body will look good and feel good if you eat healthy foods that consist of greens and protein. Exercise is also good for the body and mind. Exercise relieves stress and keeps your body strong. It also makes you look good. Smoking is the worst for your health. It causes not only lung cancer but several other health conditions. Your lungs are so important because it involves breathing, imagine having trouble breathing everyday. Alcohol is also bad because it causes liver damage, affects memory in the brain, and it eventually turns into sugar which causes weight gain. Follow these five steps and you will have a healthy life.

  23. Assuming that I was writing a magazine article, I would tell my readers the five most important things that they can do to help maintain and protect their health. The first thing that people can do to help protect their health is making sure they are getting in the right amount of exercise every day. It is very important to maintain a healthy weight. Also, exercise can solve many health problems, and can also prevent many health problems. The second thing people should do for their health is to try and live a stress free lifestyle. I am not going to stay that people need to live a stress free life because that would be unrealistic. We all are put in stressful situations at time, but it is important that we learn how to handle it in a way that it will not affect our health. The third thing is maintaining a good healthy diet. Incorporating more fruits and vegetables in your diet will make all the difference. The forth important concept to good health is making sure you are drinking a lot of water throughout your day. Drinking tons of water is not only healthy for your body, but also for your skin. Lastly, it is very important to always get 7-8 hours of sleep every night. This can help improve your mood and make sure your body is getting the rest it needs to go through the next workday. All these factors play an important role in maintaining good health, and can help us live a longer healthier life.

    I feel that there are a variety of reasons as to why people would continue to take part in activities that can be damaging to their body. For instance one of the most common answers these individuals would give is it feels good or it’s not causing any noticeable damage to my body right now. My oldest brother used to smoke on a daily basis and would tell me that he did not see any damage at the time so it must not affect him. I’ve thought about his response for a while and considered other possibilities, such as how it makes you feel, act and if there is an addiction. I think it may be safe to say that users of these harmful activities do find a sense of pleasure and may experience some level of addiction. With everything being said I believe that users at some point believe that it will never happen to them or if it happens it won’t be all that bad. For example one on of my cousins has been smoking since he was 16 and is now 40 and possibly showing early signs of cancer. I just wish people would think about their health in the future and if become addicted could find a way to stop.

    The health documentary by DR Sanjay Gupta shows some of the problems that are faced by normal human beings that lack sleep or the scientific term called insomnia. In the video it was discovered that people spent over 2 billion dollars on sleep medication and some people turn to alcohol to solve their sleep problems. Dr Gupta interviewed some sleep experts who said that the average human being needs about eight hours of sleep and there are five stages of sleep. Human being sleep can be altered working long hours or working at nights .Research has proven that people diagnose with sleep apnea often feel tired during the day. Sleep experts have also suggested that it is not recommended to exercise before going to sleep. If you have problems sleeping at night you can visit a sleep expert or doctor for an assessment.

  27. Doctors believe smoking causes lung cancer by damaging the cells that line the lungs. When you inhale cigarette smoke, which is full of cancer-causing substances (carcinogens), changes in the lung tissue begin almost immediately. At first your body may be able to repair this damage. But with each repeated exposure, normal cells that line your lungs are increasingly damaged. Over time, the damage causes cells to act abnormally and eventually cancer may develop. I just want to ask a question to whoever is reading this... Why do you smoke? Why do you think smoking is fun? Because for me, I do not think smoking is fun or anything, cigarettes smell bad and they make your teeth yellow they also make your breathe smell very bad. So what is the advantages about smoking? The best you can do about this issue is make people aware, and let them make there own choice. Everything comes with a consequence, and if you are old enough to understand that you are taking a drug, you are also able to understand that a consequence comes with it.     The first of these is knowing what you're putting in your body. You are what you eat, truthfully. Nowadays so much information is being turned up about the damaging affects processes foods and refined sugars have on our bodies, its bringing a lot of awareness to what people choose to eat. Of course indulging here and there is part of life but being fully responsible for how you feel by what you eat is an essential part to living a healthy lifestyle.
    My second step to a healthy life is exercise. Find what it is that gets you excited and ready to move and persure it. Whether that be a sport, a gym, a skateboard anything. Not only does exercise build a stronger body, it builds a stronger and happier mind too.
    My next tip is to practice mindfulness. Taking a few moments or minutes each day to appreciate the present moment and acknowledging a few things you are grateful for can help you calm your mind and put you in a good mood.

    Many of us think that sleeping is not important and it's just a time to relax but we're totally wrong because our life depends on sleep we can't think or remember something if our brain is not fresh. sleeping helps our brain and memory to refresh and if we don't get enough sleeping than we are going to forget more than half of what we studied and we are not going to be able to understand our lessons the next day. Also sleeping depends on how old you are because when you’re young you need more time to sleep to grow healthier.

  40. My whole life, I have grown up around many influences telling me that smoking is extremely bad for everyone's health. It affects you, your pets, your family and everyone who is around you. I have known many people who smoke, and even some people who were able to quit. The main cause of why I am highly against smoking is because of my grandfather. He smoked since he was a teenager and had a tough time quitting, to the point where it wasn't possible for him to quit. He died in his 50's due to cancer from smoking so much. He knew he would die from cancer and that it was caused by smoking, but he didn't expect it to come so soon. I noticed that everyone I have met that smokes, does know that it will cause cancer and might ultimately kill them. The reason they struggle to quit so much is because of it's addiction, I have met many people who wanted to quit and are actually making efforts to quit, but the main reason why people still smoke is because it is just extremely hard to quit. I believe that the efforts people are now taking against smoking are having an impact of decreasing smoking, but I also see that the Vapor smoking is still keeping people buying more. It is not different than actual cigarettes, because you are still going to get cancer by smoking using the vapors.

  41. As adults we know what is good and what is bad for us, but yet no one of us is perfect to always pick the right choice. If we all could be right always then no one would be a failure in our world.. I believe that we always decide to do the bad decisions over the right ones because we think it is cool and by doing something bad it won’t affect our health and hurt is. Smoking for example doesn’t affect our health immediately but in the long run it does hurt us in a bad way. Us humans, care a lot about our desires more than our health most of the time. I have advised a lot of my friends to quit smoking because it could cause them lung cancer in the future. I want to save my friends and family from smoking, but sometimes they never listen and they think they are doing something good. Another example would be taking drugs. A reason for taking drugs would be depression. A lot of people who are depressed tend to not care and use drugs which is so bad in it could cost them their lives. Taking drugs shouldn’t be allowed to anyone because it is not safe and many people have lost their lives taking drugs and we can always solve our depression with something else. Overall I believe that many people decide to do bad things under depression and many more reasons but if they take a minute and think about their health in the long run, many of us would take back our bad decisions and make better decisions.

    The video that I watch was by DR Sanjay Gupta that showed some of the problems that many of us face regularly which is lack sleep or the scientific term would be “insomnia”.The video showed how people spent almost over 2 billion dollars on sleep medication which is insane and also it showed that many people try to use alcohol to solve their sleep problem. In the video Dr Gupta sat down with sleep experts and they said that everyone of us needs at least eight hours of sleep everyday and they also stated that there are five stages of sleep.Research has shown that people who doesn’t get enough sleep will feel tired all day.Sleep experts said that it is not a good idea to do activities that might get you awake and keep you away from sleeping which is done by many people. If you are facing a sleeping problem you need to see a doctor because it is important and it could harm your health.

  43. I want to start this post off my saying I do have some sleep disorders that I have been dealing with for years. For me, I would love to get more sleep and better quality sleep. I have tried my different things from, holistic remedies to, medication, and machines to help with my sleeping issues but have not found anything that has helped. Sleep deviration can affect judgment, mood, ability to learn and retain information, and may increase the risk of serious accidents and injury. My lack of sleep has greatly affected my ability to retain information while studying and during class. To combat this, I will usually record everything so that I can go back to the information when I am in a better mental state.

    I often hear people say “I’ll sleep when im dead” or “there’s not enough hours in a day”. I think these sayings are what usually cause people to not get enough sleep. Your home life and work schedule determine what your sleep pattern will look like. Most of my sleep issues did not start until I started working the 7pm-7am shift on the labor and delivery ward. I worked that schedule for pretty much three years and my sleep pattern did not reverted back to the way it was before. But I am hopeful and I will continue to push through until I meet all my educational goals.

    I think people continue to smoke as a relaxation technique. I know they get addicted to the nicotine but I never really understood what part of it is addicting or how it is. They ignore the long-term effects for the short-term satisfaction and relaxation smoking gives them. People continue to overeat because they first of all probably love food and they are probably so used to their bad eating habits its hard to stop. People take illegal drugs for the same reason they smoke and drink. Its a way to relax and it provides some short-term satisfaction. People miss out on sleep because they're so busy. Sleep is less important in comparison to the tasks they need to complete. There aren't enough hours in the day for a lot of people. Some people also have a tough time sleeping in general. Whether it’s a sleep disorder or from anxiety or extreme amounts of stress. Whenever I watch a super scary movie I can’t sleep for days. For the unsafe sex part, I think people get so caught up in the moment that the negative long-term effects that could possibly happen aren't important anymore. However, I think people regret the unsafe sex most after they do it.

Personally I believe that people with strong addictive personality are somewhere chemically imbalanced. Although, cigarettes have nicotine, which is, a highly addictive additive added to create long lasting customers. Moreover, obesity in American is continuing to grow rapidly in large part due to our busy life styles, families don’t have time to make home good meals they depend on the simplicity of driving through a drive through to pick up a bad full of heart attacks. There are several forms of drugs that you can become addicted to alcohol, marijuana, prescription pills, and other mind-altering drugs. Often times you will see that someone got involved with drugs due to a life crisis they couldn’t handle, family or friends giving back examples, and other times its just to experience it. Using drugs illegally will undoubtedly take over your ability to think for yourself and make rational decisions therefore; it’s extremely difficult to stop something that has made you yearn for its very taste. Additionally, getting enough rest is crucial for a healthy start to a new day otherwise your body is over worked and cannot catch up. All in all, practicing safe sex should be something that everyone is conscious of for the protection of themselves and their partner.

  50. America has been well known for being a "fat" country and honestly the facts do not lie. Statistics say that one out of every three Americans is obese. That is a ridiculously high amount of obese people in our country. Kids these days are not exercising regularly and are spending way to much time on smart phones, video games and computers. Whether they are just playing video games, surfing the web or just on social media applications these kids are being hurt in the long run even tho they don not know it. These kids do not realize that living a healthy lifestyle can benefit there life in many different ways, the biggest being extended life period. They are not getting enough physical activity in there daily lives, not enough sleep because of there electronics and lastly are always eating. The younger generation needs to be taught by the ones before them to live a healthier life.

    For me, i do not think the younger generation knows how bad these things are for them when they are being abused as daily habits. For the older generations who love to smoke, drink or eat unhealthy, well that just isnt very smart and ignorant. These people know how bad it is towards there health, but decide not to listen either because they all think they are lucky and that it wont happen to them or that they are so addicted that they cant help but to smoke, drink or eat unhealthy. Nonsmokers might consider taking an empathetic approach to smokers who are trying to quit, and parents might use a "tough love" approach with their children to make sure they don't even start.
    -Exercise and physical activity continue to emerge as primary components of a healthy lifestyle at any age. Aerobic exercise, weight training and recreation are critical not just to our cardiovascular health but to our brain health, as well. Every time our heart beats, 25 percent of its output goes to our brains-quite a large market share! Clearly, maintaining efficient blood flow to our brains through regular exercise promotes health. If you don't exercise regularly, start by walking around the block tonight and build from there.
    -We Americans tend not to under consume anything, including food. Yet the leading factor for longevity in animals is caloric restriction. This finding has yet to be demonstrated in humans. However, provided you get your daily nutritional needs from the USDA'S food pyramid, you should pay close attention to how much you eat.
    -We specialize in stress, with little understanding of how to have fun. We need more time to socialize, celebrate and laugh! Some of us have walls around us that keep other people away. As humans, though, we need to be engaged and to be social. Kofi Annan, the secretary general of the United Nations, once stated that every time "we lose an elder from our village, we lose a library." If we begin to think of everyone as a library, it becomes clear that we can learn from others.

    There are many ways to maintain good health but here are five of the most important. The first health tip is get enough sleep, if you want to have enough energy to survive the entire day this is vital. The second tip I would give is have a healthy breakfast! other than sleep, breakfast is the one thing that will power you for the day without this meal you will likely be exhausted and not function as well as you would if you had breakfast. The third tip is to work out! working out is a great stress reliever as well as a good way to stay in shape, it takes your mind of things while burning calories! The fourth tip is that you should eat fruits or vegetables with every meal, not only do they have good nutritional value but they also help you feel fuller and cut down on calories like if you ate bread instead of vegetables. The last thing that I recommend is relax! The tips above don't count for much if you are feeling stressed! Do something for yourself once in a while, go see a movie, go wine tasting, go to dinner with some friends! Being less stress will cause wonders for your life and you will feel happier with yourself.
