One of the key concepts in this chapter is
that we use all the senses to learn, a process called multi-sensory
integration. Of all the senses,
visualization is the most powerful.
Think
about how you can use multiple senses (visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic,
gustatory, olfactory) to be successful in challenging material in your present
courses or think about one of the scenarios below and apply this concept being successful in one of these situations.
For your second post, reply to another
student. Your reply to another student
can be shorter than your posting on using multiple senses to learn.
1.
You just read the
assigned chapter in economics and cannot remember what you read. It went in one ear and out the other.
2.
In your anatomy and
physiology class, you are required to remember the scientific name for 100
different muscles in the body.
3.
You signed up for a
philosophy class because it meets general education requirements. You are not
interested in the class at all.
4.
You have a mid-term in
your literature class and have to read 400 pages in one month.
5.
You must take American
history to graduate from SDSU. You think that history is boring.
6.
You have been
introduced to an important business contact and would like to remember his/her
name.
7.
You are enrolled in an
algebra class. You continually remind yourself that you have never been good at
math. You don’t think that you will pass this class.
8. You are taking a math course that is required for graduation and you are having difficulties understanding some of the math problems. You are concerned that you may not pass the course.
I know that in biology, I have to use more than one of these senses to help me understand the material. The ones I use the most are visualization and auditory. When it comes to learning new lessons, I have to see the powerpoint while listening to my professor teach. Reading the slides help me remember everything and listening helps me understand it completely. I love this class also because it involves a lot of reading and visualizing. I feel that if I only had the option of learning through auditory or visualization, I would be more successful in visualizing. Touch is also important when it comes to the labs. Even smell is important because I will never forget smell, especially when I am dissecting something. These senses help me understand biology and help me be more successful in the class.
ReplyDeleteHi Savannah,
DeleteI also enjoy taking biology courses they are fascinating and capture many of your sensory skills. You are absolutely correct about remembering the smell when working in labs that require dissection. Or visualization to remember the diagrams of different functions in the body. Personally, making flash cards practicing them daily and going to tutoring in a study group helped me tremendously. I hope your biology class is going well for you this semester.
Best,
Kaley
-You must take American history to graduate from SDSU. You think that history is boring.
ReplyDeleteThinking of a class such as history in a very boring way will now allow my brain to function and I will lose interest in the class, which will probably lead me to failing the class or getting a really poor grade. In order to be successful in that class, I must keep on telling my brain positive things and make myself more interested in the topics discussed in class, try to study more about them and follow up in the history from several of years ago. This technique will help improve my skills in liking the class and getting good grades as well as good information out of it.
Telling yourself positive things in order to pass the class is a great way to start. Don't forget though that if you can find some way to tie something you are interested in to what you are learning. This would be a way to make yourself interested in the topic.
DeleteHello Marln,
DeleteI agree with you about what you said, I used to hate history when I was in the high school because it was so boring and complicated, but I always used to remind myself of how successful I will be if I was more positive about what I am doing and how to get over it. If we don't think positively, we will not be able to success,
Hello Marln,
DeleteI like how you would try to keep a positive attitude so you will not get bored. In history, it is more fun to pay attention and learn, then to sit and be bored all the time.
-You are enrolled in an algebra class. You continually remind yourself that you have never been good at math. You don’t think that you will pass this class.
ReplyDeleteI can not keep such a negative thoughts in my brain because such thoughts will lead me to do really miserable in the class and the rest of my math classes. I must maintain good and positive energy in such a class and try to learn everything step by step to get good results that will prove my negative thoughts wrong. Doing extra work to learn the material better, get help from those who enjoy math and are willing to help will for sure as well improve many obstacles I face in the class.
Yu could also take notes and have a study partner. I would even say sit in front of the class so you have less distractions and you could take better notes to go home and over and study.
Delete-You must take American history to graduate from SDSU. You think that history is boring. When it comes to history, it can be very boring. In order to use all your senses, it can be hard. Visually, you learn a lot just by reading the text and the notes for the class session. You can use your auditory senses by listening to the teacher and try to explain what you need to know to another student. Try some food that was popular in the time that you are studying. For example, if you are learning about the Sugar Act in 1764; you can try eating a food that has a molasses base. Also, if you can try and find a way to tie the information to something you already know that would be even better.
ReplyDeleteHi Maria I think that the example you gave is great and explaining what you learn to others around you is also a very great strategy!
DeleteAshley Crawley
ReplyDeleteIn your anatomy and physiology class, you are required to remember the scientific name for 100 different muscles in the body.
in order to remember all 100 using all four senses (visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic, gustatory, olfactory) I would start by reading my book and gather pictures of all the parts. I would then match them all to food that I like or that I know of like for overaies I would use a pear because they are kind of shaped the same. for bones I would use a chicken boon to remember the bones and so on. I would come up with a rap and a rhyme to remember the names as well and put them in a order that would be easier for me to remember. for kenistheicts I would read and study while walking that helps with my memory. when I think about what I was doing as I was studying it brings the information back to memory. lastly I would listen closely to what the teacher says take notes and try and get with a group of friends to talk about what we learned and even make up flash cards to quiz each other. I would find a quite place to study when home an study at times that I am relaxed and don't have munch on my mind.
Hi Ashley Crawley,
DeleteI liked the way through your studies you save the information or things you do like things, from food or a rap, and that is for sure will facilitate keeping things smooth and simple manner.
Hi Ashley,
DeleteI was reading your post and find it very interesting how you would compare what you need to learn to things you already know based off of similarities in shape and size. Also the fact that you would create a rap or rhyme to learn is quite remarkable, I’ve used similar techniques as you in the past and come back to them when it is necessary. Your techniques are very creative and helpful I will definitely try some of them soon, keep up the creativity and studying great job.
Hi Ashley,
DeleteI completely understand those kind of study methods that you went through. I had to do similar things like that to memorize certain concepts and structures. It would be hard not to study in a weird way if you are trying to memorize a million things in the body and what they do!!!
I like your creative idea of connecting what you need to remember to your favorite foods. Good job!
DeleteHello,
ReplyDelete-- You must take American history to graduate from SDSU. You think that history is boring. The history class contains a lot of in depth explanation of events and details, so we have to use all the senses. The sense of sight is the strongest sense of the best way to learn anything and that by reading and understanding the lesson and then save it. Especially auditory sense is also useful by attending lectures and listen to them and participate in classroom discussions and ask questions out loud we will be able to remember what we read or heard through our lessons. The sense of touch is also important in writing and writing important notes and create a simple and easy scheme to make it easier on us topic so that we can understand. As the movement and facilitate the study and review materials walk through. All the senses important in human life in general, as a task for the study and education.
Great post Muntaha. I would also add kinesthetic sense because it is very useful. You can use this sense by studying in different locations or you could even try visiting a museum to get more interest in the history topic that the person is currently learning about.
DeleteThe scenario from above I decided to use is "You must take American history to graduate from SDSU. You think that history is boring.". For visual you could look over the power points and look at the images to get a better sense of the material being learned so you get a little more interested. For auditory you should always try to attend the lectures because I feel that most teachers try to make their class more interesting than just trying to read the book. For tactile you can write notes from a video on the subject to get a better understanding on the subject. For kinesthetic you could go to museums that are about the history topic you are covering in class to not just be reading or listening to lectures, but to be able to experience it in a different perspective. As for gustatory you can chew on your favorite piece of gum while studying the history subject so therefore recalling information will be easier. Lastly, olfactory you can bake something that smells good during study time and it will also help with recalling information studied previously.
ReplyDeleteHi Paloma. I agree 100% with all you wrote. After reading the chapter I found it interesting to see how all of our senses can help us study. Great post!
DeleteGood examples of using all the senses to learn.
Delete“You just read the assigned chapter in economics and cannot remember what you read. It went in one ear and out the other.” Sometimes people will have some difficulties understanding what they are reading if they don’t use some of the multiple senses. If I read one chapter and I didn’t remember what I just read I will use Visual sense to help me in reading. First, I will Underlining the important ideas is the best way to learn what I am reading; I should not underline the whole page to not have difficulty understanding. Second, I will highlight the key words, or paraphrases to look for the information very quick. An addition, writing sticky notes can help a lot because I can take sticky notes with me wherever I go and start studying them when I have a free time. Using visual sense can help people a lot to understand what they are reading and they can be ready to jump into new chapter.
ReplyDeleteHi Sally,
DeleteI read your post and I agree with you because reading something without taking the most important details will not help us to remember everything in the test or the exam, so we need to use another way by underline the key words and use them to help us because those key words are our key for success and without them, we will failed.
4- If I have a mid-term in my literature class and I have to remember 400 pages in one month, I will try to take some notes and write it down on a piece of paper to remember the most important information that represent in the book or maybe underline those important details because that will help me in my class. It's not easy to remember everything we have read, but sometimes if we read the notes, it will let our brain make a refresh for this information and try to remember everything that belong to the topic that we studied and give us the whole picture about it.
ReplyDeletehi Ban
DeleteWhen I read your post I saw that we share the same idea when we have a mid-term. It is very important to write down the notes, so that will help us to remember all the information when we do a review. This way will let our brain remembering all the information.
Hi Ban
DeleteI have read your post and I like the way that how you study also I noticed that we have common things. I'm also take notes when I feel the materials go hard. However, underlining the important things is a good idea, and it's grape our attention so we can focus on them when we read for exam or tests. At the end I hope you the best.
8- You are taking a math course that is required for graduation and you are having difficulties understanding some of the math problems. You are concerned that you may not pass the course.
ReplyDeleteI will try to think positively about my ability to succeed in math. If I have had difficulties understanding some of the math problems I will not concern, but I will try step-by-step to see where is the problem. Also, I need to spend more hours studying math to be successful in a college math course. It is important to review what I learned to remember if I forget anything. A study group is also useful to practice more, and the person feels more comfortable to ask any question.
Hi Eva.
DeleteTelling yourself positive things in order to pass the Math class is a great way to start. It is very important to write down all the math problem and try to solve all of them and keep practicing over and over again , so that will help you to remember all the points and how to solve them. This way will let your brain remembering all the information.

DeleteHi Eva,
DeleteWhen I read your post, I knew that we are sharing the same idea and I agree with you. If you understand the problems step by step, you will understand everything clearly. Also, practicing is great for us because If we practice many times either in group or by ourselves, we will be good in math and get a good grades. In addition, thinking positively is a right way and the good way to be success in your life.
"You have a mid-term in your literature class and have to read 400 pages in one month."
ReplyDeleteI would start by not stressing over it and just begin to skim over the chapters. After skimming the chapter I would be using sticky notes to divide how many pages I need to finish every week so that I know I will get all 400 pages read in time. Basically having deadlines for myself will help me to stay at a good pace and be aware of the amount I will be handling each week so that I do not fall behind and instead I actually will be on top of things instead of putting it off and not getting it done because it is so many pages.
Hey! I think having small deadlines to keep yourself on time is a great idea. I always find myself running late on big assignments like that and I plan to use this in the future!
DeleteHi everyone, 8. You are taking a math course that is required for graduation and you are having difficulties understanding some of the math problems. You are concerned that you may not pass the course.
ReplyDeleteI'm taking math class and it requires for my graduation and of course I have problems to solve, so I'm using my brain to think about this problem and understanding it slowly until I will reach to the right solution. Also, when my instructor explain the lecture, I'm always taking notes and write it down on my notebook to use it later at the exam. Also, If I didn't understand any part of the problem I will ask my instructor to explain it again and don't move to another problem until I understand everything. In addition, I'm thinking positively and I'm trying to exploited my memory as much I can to remember the most important thing at the exam or quizzes. Also, I'm always don't worry that I will pass or not, but just keep going and don't give up.

DeleteHi Sandy
DeleteI like what you do when you take notes and when you use your brain to think how to solve difficult problems that face you in math class. We have certain things that common such as take notes, ask instructor when don't understand, and when think positively about the negative things. I would add a small advice that could help you to be sucssesful which to keep it up and be always in the right side/way like now and never give up even if you faced problems in your life
I especially like your idea of never giving up. Too often students give up early when they could be successful with a little more effort.
Delete8. You are taking a math course that is required for graduation and you are having difficulties understanding some of the math problems. You are concerned that you may not pass the course.
ReplyDeleteIn this case I try my best to understand the lecture, and if I didn't understand the lesson, I ask the instructor or the students to explain the material that I didn't understand. Also, I google everything that I feel it's hard to understand. I create many positive ways to pass the class, doesn't matter if I struggled in the beginning, the important thing is to pass the challenges at the end and pass the class with good grade.
Using Google and YouTube can be a great help in understanding your math course. Good job!
Delete8. You are taking a math course that is required for graduation and you are having difficulties understanding some of the math problems. You are concerned that you may not pass the course.
ReplyDeleteWhat I always do to pass math problems is use my all senses, and also I always Pay attention to my instructor, so I avoid things that could take my attention away the lesson. I do my homework immediate after the class ended, so I wont forget the lesson. Also, in my classes I always Sit next to friendly, positive people so they can help me when I need help. However, my best way to understand lesson is to ask the instructor at the end of the class about the things that I didn't understand, so I can get the best answers that help me to understand what's going on in the class
I agree with you that we always Pay attention to my instructor, I do my homework immediate after the class ended, so I wont forget the lesson.
Deleteand also get help from the instructor when we need to.
Hi Waleed,
DeleteIt is good to always listen and pay attention when it comes to math. Math is not an easy subject and if you are off task for just a little, you can miss a lot of stuff. It is also good sit next to people that will help you and encourage you to do well.
ReplyDeleteYou just read the assigned chapter in economics and cannot remember what you read. It went in one ear and out the other.
I like the scenario because that’s often happen to everyone of us, specially when we have problem and also when we read an article and its boring we don’t give attention to what we read, so this is the reason why we forgot it fast. And also that happen when somebody are telling his problem and we remember that we are having the same problem to we start think about our problem and not pay attention to the person who are taking to us.
I agree with you because we all have that one study material that we find just boring. For instance for me would be history, so I’m forced to find something that interests me in the context to maintain focused. A great study strategy that I learned in this chapter would be to break every 25 minutes for about 5 minutes and continue with the lecture.
DeleteAsking yourself a way to implenent what you had learn will sparkle interest in you and will make the chapter less overwhelming to you.
DeleteI chose this scenario because In order to remember the economic chapter that I just read I would look back at my highlights and annotations that I would of made to use as reference. Most of the time study material is boring unless you find something interesting that catches your eye, so another strategy that I would use is to memorize key concepts by repeating them aloud as I read the economics chapter. Taking coronel notes as your read could also a great strategy to maximize your memory. Also an important study strategy is to take breaks every twenty five minutes for five minutes at least to refresh the brain, and while I do I could also use flashcard to study vocabulary words and remember the definition of them. The memory is very powerful and if used right it could be used long term.
ReplyDeleteYour response to scenario 1 is a very good tool for someone who desire to study economics and any other subject. Many students will tend to forget the main points in the chapter due to the fact that it can be lengthy or simply just boring. As you mentioned highlighting and making annotations are very useful techniques to understand and remember a chapter. Breaks are also important during study time because it gives you time to relax and get your mind right. Some researchers also found out that studying for 45 minutes and taking a break for 15 minutes help increase the ability to understand and it is wise to leave your study area for a while take a stretch drink a glass of water during study time. As mentioned before your tips on studying would be very helpful for some preparing for college and someone who is having a difficult time retaining information.
Delete-You are enrolled in an algebra class. You continually remind yourself that you have never been good at math. You don’t think that you will pass this class.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, you need to stop thinking in a negative way, so your mind doesn't believe that. Thinking positive is the first step to be succesful in that class. You must understand math is very different from other subjects. Math is sequential , so that means that means that you need to fully understand one step to move on to the next one. Make math your study priority and invest at least 10 hours per week to study it. Persistency and Practice will help you being succesful in algebra.
Hello Omar,
DeleteI agree with you about what you said, thinking positively is the most important thing you do when you have a math test. Math needs a lot of relaxation because it is not easy, it needs a lot of thinking and focusing. If you study day by day for the subjects you are taking, you will be very successful in your material. Math is important and if it didn't take all our attention, we won't be able to do well in it.
Hello Omar,
DeleteI totally agree with you, and if people do not think that they will pass the course or not, instead of thinking negatively they should keep trying harder and pass the class because they will end up wasting the whole semester for nothing and it will be just because they did not try hard. Math is a hard subject and it needs a lot of practice, so practice and practice.
Scenario 1
ReplyDeleteAccording to chapter 7 you can use the multiple senses to help you remember what you have read. These multiple senses are visual ,auditory, tactile kinesthelic, gustatory and olfactory. The first thing you can do is skim through the chapter looking at the main points, pay attention to the words written in bold and pay attention to the summary of the entire chapter. As you begin to read the chapter highlight important points in the text, make summary sheets, use sticky notes and pay attention to the pictures and diagrams. When you are reading ask yourself questions and read out aloud saying the information verbally. Discussing what you have read with a friend or students in your class would help you remember. Another way to remember is use acronyms to remember key words and explanations for key ideas. While reading take notes, make outlines, list key points and use flash cards to review key terms. During reading ensure to take a break and you can study at different locations. According to chapter 7 you can increase you understanding of the chapter by dividing the amount of pages per study session. Finally test your understanding by writing a summary on what you read.
This is a good summary of the important points in the chapter. Keep up the good work.
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteIf I want to be successful in my life, I will do all my best to achieve this goal, If I have to take a history class to transfer to SDSU, I will do all my best to success in it. If the history class was boring to me, I will try to make it interesting, If I kept thinking about it and how boring it is, I will not get over it. When I was in the high school, my teacher told us that if we love what we are studying, we will not love what we are doing because love comes first and If we do so on what we study, we will be successful.
Hello Wafa,
DeleteIt is important to learn to enjoy taking a class that might not interest you. Most of all students will come across having to take a course they have no interest in. When I am required to take a course that does not interest me, I try and find the best possible situation to help me get through the class. For example, I try and create friendships and study buddies because I know that studying with individuals who enjoy the subject will make me more interested too. I hope these tips help you!
Hello,
ReplyDeleteIn order to be successful in my life, I have to focus and set my mind to achieving this goal. I just read the assigned chapter and cannot remember what I read. This happens to make a lot actually. If I want to be successful, I have to teach myself the best ways to process and remember important information. When I read a chapter but I don't quite remember or understand what I read, I often times will re-read the chapter and use my visual senses to help me remember the information. For instance, if there are figures that are used as examples, I try and remember the figure and relate it to the topic that I am trying to learn. Using my visual senses has helped me when trying to remember multiple concepts.
Hi Ashley, when you read the chapter and you don't understand it try to make sure that there is nothing around you that is distracting you or anything that makes noise. Having classic music on can help you concentrate on the chapter.
DeleteUsing multiple senses to learn is a major key to your college success. If a topic is challenging to you you have to find a way to immerse your senses in it to fully understand. Using auditory and visual senses can really help in recalling info that you've read. While kinesthetic can really help in areas such as biology and history. When studying, try to use as many senses as possible to help you get the most out of the info you're taking in. The most useful to me has aways been kinesthetic. I learn best by feeling and being able to locate and move things so i can fully understand.
ReplyDeleteHi Todd, I agree that it is useful to be kinesthetic to fully understand what your doing.
DeleteHey Todd, I completely agree with your viewpoint on kinesthetic learning. Being told about a subject is completely different than physically understanding what is in front of you.
DeleteThere are patterns of thinking and behaving in intelligent ways and are presented when faced with life’s problems. We want to be able to communicate with a different people and to understand how to live successfully. People learn from what they see and study so activating different senses will result in activating different parts of the brain as well. Babies learn from what they see (visual), what they hear (auditory, and what they feel (tactile). They also learn from smell (olfactory) and taste (gustatory). In other words, they learn through all their basic senses. The tactile sense is related to kinesthetic learning. This means that kinesthetic learners experience more success in these areas and see their future as being in some sort of hands-on job… using machines, repairing things that are broken, making things, or doing things. They might become mechanics, electricians, plumbers, cooks, and factory workers .This isn’t a bad thing. Training in all of these areas will focus less on reading and lectures, and more on practicing skills. Choosing a career where you can be successful and that will make you feel happy is a good choice, but other students have different career goals that require a college education.
ReplyDelete1.You just read the assigned chapter in economics and cannot remember what you read. It went in one ear and out the other.
ReplyDeleteUsing my multiple senses can help me become successful with this scenario because I can first skim through the chapter to give me an idea of what is to be read, along while skimming I can also look for bold lettering to help me understand more. Secondly, I can ask questions to myself about the material out loud or even read out loud. I can also chew gum or suck on a piece of candy to help me remember along with writing notes as I read along. Nevertheless, take a break. Taking a break will give my mind a break and making easier to remember what was learned. Lastly, go over my notes and highlighted information later on after reading the chapter the same day.
Hello Cynthia,
DeleteI also look at the bold lettering when I read any chapter especially because they are key facts for tests. You can also have a study partner where you both can read aloud and then talk about what was important in each paragraph. Post-it notes are my life savers in all my classes just writing important facts down and placing them on the page.
Thanks for sharing!
You have a mid-term in your literature class and have to read 400 pages in one month.
ReplyDeleteIf I were to have to read 400 pages in one month for a literature midterm the first thing I would do is not be overwhelmed with the amount of reading I have to do since I have a month. To start off I would think of as many ways as I can to break down the reading and one of the things I would do is create a study group of at least five to ten people that are serious about their education and divide the reading evenly amongst all of the group members. By doing this the reading is already significantly less, now each person would be reading between 40-80 pages in one month. I would also ask that in that assigned amount of pages each member creates a set of important terms along with a set of notes for summaries and important characters or passages. I would put a due date of at least a week and a half before the midterm for the group to finish so a week before the exam the group can come together and either review it or make copies and review at their convenience. I know that this strategy I mentioned was not in the text but this something I had to constantly do when I first started college at a university and had to read 40- 80 pages a week per subject I was taking. Going back to taking personal notes I would make sure that I only write down what I find important and write few summaries along with only highlighting a small portion of the text/notes.
hello richard,
Deletewhat I would do if I had a 400 pages to read I would read it with a partner every one of us would read a part out loud so we don't get bored and sleepy and we won't forget it!
Salah,
DeleteI really like your suggestion! I think it is a smart way to get through that many pages. I feel like when I study with people or hear someone else say something regarding the information we are studying, it sticks more than if I was studying alone. So your suggestions was great. When I study alone if feel as if I am not as productive and I do not retain as much as I would if in a group setting. Again, great idea.
400 pages divided by 30 days in the month is only 13-14 pages a day or 40 pages a week. If you read a small amount at a time, it makes the project more manageable.
DeleteYou are enrolled in an algebra class. You continually remind yourself that you have never been good at math. You don’t think that you will pass this class.
ReplyDeleteI this was me I will not drop the class like most of the college students. I am not good at math and I repeated the same math class because I didn't pass it at first, but after I read this chapter I figured out that using the senses and visualization makes people understand everything and every subject if they stick to the sensing rules. for example learning through visualizing is reading the math problems, reading chapters in the text book and looking at the teacher and learn how to solve something. Auditory is learning when listening carefully to the teacher and pay attention. Tactile is learning when trying to do the problem by ourselves. Kinesthetic learning is when moving closer to someone that really understand what is happening during their lecture, and try to ask question. Olfactory learning does not work with math because you can not smell a math problem. Lastly, gustatory is learning throgh taste like when eating something you can have some snack during lecture but it doesn't really work with math as well.
#2 In your anatomy and physiology class, you are required to remember the scientific name for 100 different muscles in the body.
ReplyDeleteTrying to remember 100 different muscles is difficult and I can not memorize them overnight! Remembering 100 muscles takes time and how I could remember the muscles, I would get a print out of the human body and place post it notes on all the muscles I need to remember. Also splitting up the regions of the body would help me remember the muscles faster. Than after getting one region done, I would move on to the next part of the body. Studying one region at a time will make me successful in learning the muscles. Having a study group would also help me remember the muscles. To hear it from other students will help me also remember where the muscles are. Playing a game would make it fun for everyone and keep them motivated in learning the muscles of the human body.
Good ideas here. The key is to learn a small amount at a time and review frequently.
DeleteIn your anatomy and physiology class, you are required to remember the scientific name for 100 different muscles in the body.
ReplyDeleteThis one is so hard to remember, since the names of the muscles in the body are so hard and so long, what I will do is trying to point at every picture that belongs to the name of the muscle so I can what I am stydying, after that I will write them on a piece of paper so I can remember them better, after that I will point at every picture and say the name with it and this will be my technique to study such as hard words as these. I tried to use this techniques before, but it used to be easy in my language, but in English, it would be so hard to remember.

ReplyDeleteYou are enrolled in an algebra class. You continually remind yourself that you have never been good at math. You don’t think that you will pass this class.
ReplyDeleteOf-course I wouldn’t remind myself that I’m bad at math because if I do then I would do worse that I think. I should always motivate myself and study more and more. I should also motivate myself, for example I can reward myself every time I do a good job on a test and that’s how I’m going to do better and better each time. To become better I should also practice doing math problems and study every chapter we do so when the test comes I already have been mastered everything.
hi salah,
DeleteI like how you motivate your self, keep it up and never give up even if you fail, everyone learn from their mistakes.
I agree with you I like to practice problems to get better and understand the subject, math needs a lot of practice so I love to spend time in math center to ask questions I don't understand.
DeleteWhen I was in the Navy I had to take exams in order to advance to the next pay grade along with other requirements. To prepare for these exams, I spent a lot of time studying. I also attended an Enlisted Advancement Program, which helps to prepare sailors for the exam. During the EAP sessions, I would take notes and I also recorded the person that was giving the class. I also prepared for the exams by making flashcards for every section that I knew was going to be on the exam. On my way into work, I made an effort to listen to the recordings I made, which helped me to retain a lot of the information. One tip that I got from a senior enlisted sailor regarding gustatory and olfactory was to chew a piece of gum while studying. His reasonings are it can help you to remember information, it wakes your brain up, allows you to focus and also to concentrate. He explained that you will get a short burst of recognition when you chew on gum and since chew gum while taking the exam is permitted he believes it is a great little trick to stimulate your mind. I personally cannot say this trick works because I’ve never tried it but I’m sure it is worth a try. All of my studying strategies helped me tremendously because I made rank the first try for every exam I took.
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea you had of recording and then listening to it while doing something so common like driving! This is something I'm definitely going to try in my Psychology lectures from now on. I have heard the same tip about chewing gum or eating something specific while studying in order to jog your memory. I haven't tried it either but I think I will next time. Good tips! :)
DeleteYou must take American history to graduate from SDSU. You think that history is boring
ReplyDeleteI'm taking history 109 now and I love history classes, very interesting to learn about American history, I'm not from here so it is nice to learn about how America was in the past and how it changed over time. History classes are short so time goes by really fast. I do really good in my history classes and I really enjoy it. I like to read the chapter before I got to class so that I understand everything and that makes history class easy.
I think that its is important that anyone in that specific senario should think positivly about the class, if not it will be very hard for you to do well since in your head you are already limiting yourself. Try to do all of your assignments and pay attention in class. Find ways to relate the subject to things that you like to make it easier on yourself.
DeleteYour idea of reading the chapter before class is a good one. Good job!
DeleteYou just read the assigned chapter in economics and cannot remember what you read. It went in one ear and out the other.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I don’t remember what I read only some things because I can’t focus on what I read I have a lack of intelligence and I just can’t remember what I read only if I memorize it and this takes a lot of time, for me it would take like an hour to memorize a page! Sometimes I feel like it’s boring to read but I think about what I want to be in the future so I continue on because I have a big dream that I want to achieve and make every one of my family and friends proud of me. Also I work on myself a lot to become an intelligence person and I hope that I will like reading one day.
I think that a lot of intelligence is learned and you can improve it with the simple techniques in this chapter.
DeleteIf you are overwhelmed and stressed from not feeling like you have soaked up any of the information in your economic textbook like I often was in high school, take a brief break and then come back to it. Do something that involves moving your body to stimulate brain activity. Once you come back, skim over the chapter to see the different break downs of the sections, the general topics of each one, and notice any bolded or highlighted key points. Then go back and reread the sections carefully. At the end of each section, summarize what the main points were in your head, if you are unable to do so then make a note to go back to it for extra review. As you read through each section, take note of any highlighted terms or important facts from the section, as well as any questions you may have for that section.
ReplyDeleteI have also done things just like this! It really works well when you are tired and overwhelmed. You just have to keep at it.
DeleteTo help me remember a chapter in my economics textbook I would first skim through the entire chapter and find the main points. Then I'll highlight the main points and create flash cards for important vocab words. I would make sure I am eating one of my favorite candies or chewing one of my favorite types of gum. I'll also light one of the candle in my room to help me remember through my nose sense. I'll also read out loud so I can use my ear sense. If I am still finding trouble, I would then watch some youtube videos on the topic and form a study group with other people who are serious about the course.
ReplyDeleteGood ideas about using all the senses.
DeleteRecently when I met with a counselor for the Educational Plan he advised me to take a Political Science class. He suggested this because I intend on transferring to a CSU In Criminal Justice and most CSU’s require a Political Science course. Unfortunately, I have attempted to take a Political Science course before and found it to be very dry and boring. However, following the lead of the counselor I enrolled in an 8-week Political Science course with an instructor who has very good reviews. Like stated in Chapter 7 Improving Study Skills, the professor plays a roll in your learning comprehension of the subject. Considering this is a topic I am less than interested in I need a good teacher to capture my interest and I will be certain to sit in the front of the class so my full attention is directed. I vow not to miss any class so I don’t fall behind and use auditory by recording the lecture, which will allow me to listen back if there is anything I may have missed.
ReplyDeleteGetting a good teacher is important as well as focusing your attention and sitting up front. Instead of recording, I would focus on the main points and write them in my notes.
DeleteGood job!
You are taking a math course that is required for graduation and you are having difficulties understanding some of the math problems. You are concerned that you may not pass the course.
ReplyDeleteI would have a positive attitude and have confidence that I can pass the class. Since math can be difficult, I will ask for help with the tutors. I will pay close attention in class and take notes. I will also do the homework to practice on the practice that we worked on in class to try and see if I can do it by myself. I will try to form study groups so that we can help each other with problems and have fun while doing it.
I took both anatomy and physiology a couple semesters back. Those classes were difficult. I don't remember not using one of my senses. I have to say that the ones I used the most were visualization and auditory. In anatomy, we learned practically every part of the body, from bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. We would use models so that we can see where they are and that's how we would get tested. Auditory is important as well because hearing the terms over and over allowed it to stick to my head so that I won't forget it on exam day.
ReplyDeleteHey Brandon! I completely agree with you on using visual senses for Anatomy and physiology courses. Trying to memorize the whole body from every aspect such as the bones, ligaments and bones is very difficult so using all of our important senses for memorization is crucial.
DeleteIn my Anatomy class i would of course have to use all my senses to be successful in that course. If i had to memorize 100 terms i would definitely use my kinesthetic and visual learning senses the most. I would create a song or poem to remember all of the terms and then i would visualize them all or look at pictures of the terms to remember them all.
ReplyDeleteHello Alvin,
DeleteI like what you said and you are right. I like how you like to create a song or a poem to help you remember what you need to remember. That is so fun yet so smart!
1. You just read the assigned chapter in economics and cannot remember what you read. It went in one ear and out the other.
ReplyDeleteBefore giving up, go back to the text book and scan the headings. Once you do that try and think of all of the important details from each section and highlight them that way you have them for future reference and its easier to find that way. Also try to summarize what you have learned after each heading to make sure that everything is memorized well.

Looks like you posted this twice, but good ideas for remembering what you read.

Usually what I would do is use my senses. Also by listening to the professor in the class will help me understand the material. Also doing homework right after class will help you remember what you learned that day and it will also be a good way to practice if you understood what you learned. If i don’t understand something it is always a good idea to go and ask after class and use the web to have more practicing time outside school. You have to act like you want to pass so you can pass!
In your anatomy and physiology class, you are required to remember the scientific name for 100 different muscles in the body.
ReplyDeleteIn this situations your senses would be the best answer. Finding things in everyday life that can help you remember the words or compare it too can be a real help. I know that when I have to remember things I always try to pair it up with something so that it is easier for me to remember. I find that this really helps when remember words and can really improve scores for test and quiz and overall memory.
Good job, students!
