Chapter 3, Multiple Intelligences, Interests, and Values, Feb. 15-21

Hello Students,

For this week, choose any two topics below.

What are your highest multiple intelligences?  What careers do they suggest?

How are you doing this semester?  Comment on any ideas you have used from this course or any successes or obstacles you have experienced.

What is your most important value in life and how are you acting on this value to achieve your life goals?

Comment on a successful decision you have made and how it matches your values.

Comment on an unsuccessful decision you made and how it did not match your values.

What are your highest interests as described by the Interest Profiler in this chapter?  How do these interests match your career choice or the major you are considering?  Interests include realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising and conventional.

Comment on another student's post. Can you add to their comment or raise new questions?

As one of your options this week, read the following 2 scenarios and comment on one of them. Based on the individual’s values, give your opinion about what would be the best decision.

Scenario 1: What should be my major?

Shawn is twenty years old and has completed two years of college. He has been trying to decide whether to major in engineering or music. He has completed all of his general education requirements as well as several courses in music, math, and physics. As a child, Shawn was interested in science and dreamed of making new inventions. He always took things apart to see how they worked. Math was always easy for Shawn, and he received awards for achievement in science. He also took part in band throughout his school years and learned to play several instruments. As a teenager, he had a garage band and became so interested in playing the piano that he spent two hours a day practicing. Shawn’s dilemma was that he was becoming stressed out trying to do both majors and
no longer had time to do well in both music and engineering. He also wanted to have time to get a part-time job in order to become more independent. Shawn’s top five values are being independent and living on his own, having a secure future, doing interesting work, achieving something important, and being able to relax. Based on his values, what major should Shawn choose?

Scenario 2: Should Maria continue her education?

Maria is a married mother of two young boys ages five and seven and a part-time college student. Maria and her husband, Juan, are very proud of their Mexican heritage and value their marriage and family. They both think that it is important for Maria to spend time with the children. Maria learned to speak English as a second language and has made sure that her children speak both English and Spanish. While the children are in school, Maria has been attending college part-time with the goal of becoming a teacher’s aide in a class for bilingual children. She has some experience as a teacher’s aide and gets a great deal of satisfaction from helping the children. Juan works in construction, and the family has sacrificed to come up with the money to pay for Maria to attend college. Maria has struggled to earn her associate’s degree and is proud of her accomplishments. She values her education and wants her children to do well in school. Now Maria is considering continuing her education to earn the bachelor’s degree so that she can become a teacher. She would enjoy having her own classroom, loves working with children, and would have a higher income as a teacher than she would as a teacher’s aide. Maria’s husband is concerned that she will spend too much time at college and will not be home for the children. He is also relieved that Maria has finished college and plans to work part-time to supplement the family income while the children are in school. Should Maria continue her education and earn a bachelor’s degree?

  1. I think the best decision I've made was figuring out what I want to major in. I've spoken to many counselors, friends and family members for advice on what I should do and I've realized that no one can help me decide what I want to do and I had to figure this out on my own. I've decided that I want to major in biochemistry. The medical field is a perfect field for me. The difficult thing is figuring out what career to get into as a biochem major, but I know I have many options and in time I'll figure it out. I've chosen biochem because I've always been excellent in biology and chemistry so I know I'll be happy with this major. I also enjoy a good challenge. I want to have a career that I am proud of and worked hard for and I know this major will do just that for me. I am excited to see where it takes me.

  2. This semester i'm doing excellent so far. Typically i'm not the best when it comes to school but i find that college is much easier for me to get a hold of. Knowing that the only reason i am in class is to benefit me and that i really don't have to be there if i dot want to helps me stay motivated.

  3. My most important value has to be mental health. I've always struggled with it so i always have to keep up with it. I believe i value it so much because i know how awful life can be when youre not up to par on your mental health. Trying to stay positive helps as well as making the best of any situation good or bad.

  4. Hello everyone
This semester I've done a lot so far. I started to take my major classes
, and it seemed it's not going to be easy at all, but what I like in my life is challenging myself. I felt scared at the beginning, but by the time, it's getting more easier. Also, this semester is so important to me because I met new friends and I built new relationships with people. However, this semester would be the most important semester ever because I need to get good grades to finish my classes and transfer to the university, so everything depends on this semester. I hope I can do it and pass the semester with the (A)

  5. I made so many decisions in my life. Some of them were right, and the others were wrong. But my best right decision that I took was that continuing my education after I left my country. I thought I'm going to lose everything after I left my country, but nothing of that happened. I took the right decision to continuing my education, and I never regrets. I will be continuing studying till I graduate, and get better job. That's was my right decision, and I will do my best to achieve my goal.

What really motivates me is that I finished all the classes I need to transfer and this is my last semester here. So this semester I’m working hard spending a lot of time at the library doing school, and when I need help with math I go to the math center.

  12. Hello again,

The most important value to me is honesty because the presence of truth in human life or between any couple, in my opinion will be realized the rest of the values where their lives will be happy and this will create openness between them and their children, particularly mutual respect between them and the others, understanding and help others and to understand their problems and get to be resolved to the extent possible, and this in turn will create a comfortable thought and mind in making any important decision in his life, especially in social life, or in the study and this man besting inevitably in achieving its objectives because it possesses the values you pay to secure and meaningful life for the better.

  13. 1."What are your highest multiple intelligences? What careers do they suggest?"

My highest multiple intelligences were Logical-Mathematical and Naturalist. As a Logical-Mathematical intelligence I have the ability to recognize what information is important and what is not. As a Naturalist I have the ability to work with abstract ideas such as science and business. With a business interest I agree that these two intelligences have descried me correctly. The careers that they suggested were of my interest were Budget Analyst, Treasurers and Controllers and Financial Analyst.

  14. 2.” How are you doing this semester? Comment on any ideas you have used from this course or any successes or obstacles you have experienced.”

This college semester I’m doing really well here at Cuyamaca College in my academic grades. I am taking a total of 18 credits. My objective here at Cuyamaca College is to obtain an associates degree in Public Administration and transfer to SDSU. In order to achieve this I would use both of my highest intelligences such as Logical-Mathematical and Naturalist. By having these intelligences I will have the ability to recognize and identify obstacles such as work, relationships, and family what is good and bad for me to accomplish my goal.

  15. Scenario 1: What should be my major?

After reading scenario number 1 I have came to the conclusion that Shawn’s major should be engineering and a minor in music. Since he was able to complete all of his general education required courses to graduate Shawn should always have a plan B wish would be his minor in music. With a music minor he would be able to do private lessons to beginners and private shows. With his engineering major he would be able to follow his all time dream to be able to build new inventions. It sometimes could be hard to have a job and attend full time to college but anything is possible with a positive mindset and consistency.

  16. So far this semester is going pretty well I have nearly doubled my study time from previous semesters. I am putting extra time into my studies which has shown to be beneficial in my understanding of all the material I am learning. Although I have been doing well I know there is still room for improvement as far as creating a more efficient study schedule with more examples or interactive learning. As far as obstacles I am facing this semester, I am taking courses that require a significant amount of studying and practice. This is one of my major obstacles so far due to the fact that I’ve only taken a few very challenging courses and never at the same times. Even though this semester will be challenging I know I will power through it as long as I don’t give up.

  17. My two highest intelligences were naturalist and spatial, I feel that both are pretty accurate for describing my intelligences. When it comes to identifying objects and grouping them into different groups based on their appearance I can accurately decipher their similarities and notice any inconsistencies as I pay close attention to detail. The test also says that as a naturalist I have a sensitivity, awareness and interact with the environment and living things, I find this to be accurate as I do pay attention to the environment, and consider how we as people affect the environment, also I like to care for plants and most living things. As a person with spatial intelligence I excel in noticing and visualizing detail. I feel this description to be very accurate as I tend to be able to recall different figures in my textbooks from my memory as I break down the picture into different shapes and sizes. The careers suggested for these two intelligences are mainly related to science and the environment. Amongst the list of careers were jobs nursing instructor, pharmacist, agricultural technician and animal scientist. I feel that these careers were suggested since my highest intelligences suggested that I have an awareness and sensitivity towards living things and the environment.

  19. Hi everyone
My important value is how to be a good person and how to be honest in my life. I use to be a good person with others like if the people need any help from me, I will help them immediately without saying anything, If I make that, they will love me and help me any time. Also, I think this is the right decision to be a good person by making a communication with the people to reach and a chive my goals. In addition, I use to be honest with others which is mean that I don't like to lie on them about any subject and make them happy with me always and be honest with them all the time. For example, If If I lie on somebody with the important things and then he discovered that and forgive me, but in the same time, he will not trust on me any time, so I use to be good and honest with everyone and this is the most value for me in this life.

I am doing better this semester than last semester. This is my second semester in college. I am not taking a lot of classes because I took so many classes last semester and I didn't know how to manage my time. I work full time and I couldn't do all of my homework, I used to go to class without doing any of my homework assignments. I hope this semester I will pass my classes with high grades. I have not started any of my major courses because I have not done my educational plan and I don't know to where I would be able to transfer.

  21. Hello again,
My most important value in life is having an education. Before I did not care about education I just wanted to get out of high school and sit home. I think education is important because people with education can speak more than the people who don't have any degree. Most uneducated people do not know how to read and write. Plus, people who have education, they get to have their dream job. Also, people with education get paid better.

  23. What is your most important value in life and how are you acting on this value to achieve your life goals?

The most important value in my life would be stay true to who I am no matter what happens in life. It always has been the most important value. No matter where life takes me, it is necessary to me to stay true to who I am and make decisions based on my own values rather than what other might want. This is the most important value to me because it is so hard for people to be authentic in a society that encourages individuals to think and be like each other rather than individuality. To me, to stay true to yourself is a unique value.

I have an online class that I need to focus on and be good at. I am doing pretty good, I have some obstacles, but these obstacles will not prevent me from moving on and do all I can do. We all have some roadblocks in our lives, but these roadblocks will make us better and teach us how to learn from our mistakes and give us the ability to do more and more.

What is your most important value in life and how are you acting on this value to achieve your life goals?

The most important value in my life is to be an educated person, I am acting on this value by studying hard and doing my best in the classes I am taking, also, I am willing to improve my language skills. I will also try to have healthy body so I can continue because if my body fail to do his job, I won't be able to finish my studying. I will try to live the present and be a good parent as well. If I am a student, I have to make sure that I am doing a good job in my other daily life's duties.

My highest multiple intelligences is logical-mathematical. I agree with that because I love math and I'm very smart of solving most of the mathematical problem. Also, I like to organize everything and see what the important thing is and what is not. This thing is proportion with my career that is business administration. I have to complete my education in my major, so I can apply for the job that is close to my career. I like to work in the bank, especially in human resource department. I didn’t have anyone to help me, my brothers were at the military and my dad passed away when I was about 11 so life was too hard for me, I was the one who works and make his own decisions . But after all those years I came to the united states and I decided to continue my educational journey and work at the same time, that was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life!

  33. scenario 1: What should my major be? I believe that Shawn's major should be engineering. As a kid it seems like his dream was to build things or take them apart just to put them back together and as an engineer he can do all of those things and have fun doing it. The biggest reason I believe that is because being an engineer is a very good thing and for a career it has many options, which don't forget pay very well. Shawn wants to be independent, financially secure and do things that are important or interesting and being an engineer checks all of those boxes. Another thing is minoring in music which will allow Shawn to keep that aspect in his life still.

Once you begin to see how people are succeeding in their goals it will motivate you to accomplish yours based on their good results. The highest multiple intelligences is the Intrapersonal and the career that they suggested to me is an acute care nurses. I am a person who like challenges in my life especially in the difficult situation. I love to challenge myself and see if I can make differences or not, and I want also to know if I am thinking correct and I am in the right way or no. That way I find this career matches with my goal because it’s not easy to be a nurse. You need to do many things like take care of the patients, helping people, give the medicine to them in the right time, alt this stuff is challenge because the mistake is not allowed in this job and you need to be careful always and that’s what the challenge means.

  40. What is your most important value in life and how are you acting on this value to achieve your life goals?
The most important value in my life is to make a difference. This will happen if I trust in myself and my ability because sometimes we think we are weak and we can’t do it, but that’s wrong because the life give us always the new chance to do our best and correct our mistakes and also help people to understand that and this is how we can make this difference. When I see my friend and hear their problems, I tried my best to find a solution that make them happy and continue their life. For me this is my goal to see people around me happy and when I see them like that I feel happy too.

I made that decision to go back to college in 2012 and in December 2014 I earned an Associates degree at Central Texas College. I was able to transfer from Central Texas College and start taking classes for my major at Cuyamaca Community College. I am currently taking College Success class online and so far I am learning new techniques on how to be successful. I was able to learn more about my personality and possible careers that interest me. As I continue to take this course every week I gain some more knowledge on college success. Maria been a teacher in the future, the kids can benefit from after school tutoring and improving the quality of life. Construction work is seasonal and Maria's husband should reconsider his decision. My most important value is my family. They make a big part of my life, they actually are my whole life, I can’t imagine my life without them around me, they make me feel that my life worth living it. I have five daughters beside my amazing wife, these women are amazingly smart and beautiful, and they make me do anything for them because they deserve it. I go to school because they support me through my journey. They never leave me half way, they have always been there for me no matter what, and they give me the strength to accomplish all the big things in my life. The best decision I have made is going to school here in USA. This decision wasn’t easy to make because of my age, but when I started thinking of my education journey, I found out that I have good qualifications that make it easier for me to go to school, especially that I worked in school for many years and know little bid about education and how helpful it is! Education is the best weapon that people can carry all the time, it is the easiest way to get a job, it is the best way to have the knowledge about what is going on around us. However, I am continuing on the decision I have made as long as I am a live, and as long as I have the will to accomplish my plans.

For example: I learned to improve my learning strategies and be able to have a clear picture of my prefered ideal learning environment. Also, this class helped me learn more about my personality from the DWYA, which gave me a detailed description of myself and learn about my weakness to help improve them, and my strengths to maintain them. Also, from doing the change a habit project, I learned that I am capable of doing and changing anything I am willing to change if I worked hard for it.

  50. What is your most important value in life and how are you acting on this value to achieve your life goals?

The most important value in my life is to be honest
Honesty it's like a straight line that connects two points, It's strengthens the links between people and enhance confidence,
To live authentically; to live honestly, keeps our hearts and souls pure and our minds free of doubt or uncertainty. When we are honest, we know we are doing the right things.
Honesty feels like something you don’t come by often these days, but in the realm of human values, it is extremely important. The idea of staying true to oneself can often feel intimidating and impossible, but what most people fail to realize is that it is not the act of simply telling the truth that makes someone honest rather the quality of person who is being honest. An honest person is often straight, upright, sincere and fair and being an honest person brings more reward to the soul than the damage a lie could do.

  53. In terms of values, this was a little difficult for me to choose just one that I prioritize as my number one. I chose being present in the moment that I'm living. This semester I am also taking a world religions class, which has truly opened my eyes to different cultures and their accompanying spiritual beliefs. I've always considered myself a spiritual person and the class has helped my grow in figuring out my faiths. The reoccurring theme that speaks to me in all regions is the importance of living in the present moment and not focusing on the past or the future. It is something you really have to train your mind to do but with practice it is achievable. Everyday I am trying to live each moment to the fullest that I can and making decisions that only help benefit the people and world around me.

This semester is a bit smaller load than my previous semesters have been therefore it is going great. I completed my Associates of Science in Forensic Technology on Fall 2015. With that being said, my counselor advised me to take some easy or interesting classes in the Spring to bring up my GPA to transfer to a 4-year university. Taking the advise of my counselor this semester I am only taking 10 units compared to 20, so I am liking the extra time on my hands. On the other hand, I was recently informed that I would not be accepted into the college I wish to attend. While this has created a great obstacle for my plans I will continue to press forward and explore my other options.

My most important value in my life is my happiness and doing whatever it takes to maintain my happiness. I'm acting on this value by doing the things that make me happy and being around the people I love as much as possible. I also understand when someone or something has become toxic in my life and I remove them to benefit me. Honestly, being able to do that will carry much more value such as being happy, wealthy, relaxed and all the other feelings associated. In the end. It all connects in one big circle. When we stick to our most important vale, all the other values that are associated in life come into play without us realizing it and that is how I think. In order for me to achieve my life goals, I make sure that I stay focused and on track with my education and my responsibilities in life. 78. What tips would you give to a friend before he or she interviewed for a job that was really important?
The tip that I will give to my friend before he or she goes to any Interviewed is some advices about what they should do and how they should behave before they go. For example, they should dress well because the look is the first thing that will reflect on them and also will show how ready they are and give them the first impression of their personality. Also, when they go to any interview, they should know everything about this job because they ask them about it and why they want to work here and who told them about it. In addition to that, they should be confident and ready to any question and they must show them that they want this job and they are ready to do anything to get it because that what they are looking for a person who can do whatever they asked from him or her to do. Finally, I will ask them to trust in themselves and breath because if they worried they will not get the job. If they are ok, everything will be ok and the result will be like they hope. Everything in this life is hard, nothing is easy and if anyone wants something, he or she has to be patient to get it and that is common in any interview.

    ReplyDelete
  79. If someone ask me what advise I could give him when he or she interviewed for a job is by telling them to follow the most important steps, First of all these steps is to get the resume prepared and know or have idea about the question the interviewer is going to ask because sometimes they ask the same question, but we got confused about how we are gooing to answer them and what should we say. So try to practice the question with someone else and let him tells you about your strengths and your weaknesses. Secondly, you always have to use your body language like eye contact and shake the interviewer before and after the interview. Thirdly pay to the questions and the interviewer, don't look around, don't chew a gum and turn your phone off, it is one of the most important things that the interviewer will think about when he figures out who is he going to choose. The last thing is to put on clothes that suit the job that you are applying for because some places they don't like messy clothes especially when you are interviewing for a position that force you to wear formal clothes. All these steps could help you to get the job and if you do all your best, you will get it.

  80. I guess the prompt I will write on is what is a successful decision that I have made that matches my values. Two of my biggest values is that of my education and that of my family. The two of these coexist pretty harmoniously within my life. My most successful decision was to go to a junior college before university so that I could stay with the younger kids in my family. I come from an abusive home and I wanted to be there for the kids until they were big enough to take care of themselves but I also wanted to be able to pursue my education. I found that the best of both worlds is to do my schooling this way. Now, the kids are old enough to choose where they want to stay and I am at a point where I can transfer to a four year so I believe this worked out in the best way.

  81. Based on the situation in scenario 1, Shawn should stick with the engineering major. This major has plenty of room for growth but also provides the security that he values within his life. This will also allow for him to achieve something important and do something interesting. If he works well in the science and math fields then he definitely has the opportunity to move far in this field and there are many different branches he can take with an engineering degree so that being independent will not be a problem.

My biggest problem this semester is procrastination. I am constantly struggling to finish what needs to be done, some of the time I am turning in things late. Also I treat certain classes as if they are more important than other classes, when there are all equally important. A way to overcome my procrastination is to imagine my success when I actually finish everything that is required for my classes and turning it all in on time. A way to fix how I am treating my classes is to divide my time evenly among all my classes when I need to study or work on homework.
