Chapter 5, Managing Your Time and Money, Feb 29-Mar6

This new chapter is about time management and is one of the most powerful chapters in the text. For this week's discussion, share one of your lifetime goals and describe the time management techniques you will use to accomplish this goal. If there are obstacles in the way, how will you deal with them?

For your second post, read another student's post and make a comment about it. Sometimes it is helpful to read about other students' goals and how they are managing to accomplish them. The first post can be longer and the second one can be shorter.

I will share with you one of my lifetime goals and how I used the ideas in this chapter to accomplish it. My lifetime goal was to write a book on how to be successful in college because I struggled as a young college student and learned how to be successful. Then I taught the topic for 30 years. I had some time off from work and set as my goal to write the text. I found myself distracted by things around the home. I would get up in the morning and exercise, make myself a nice breakfast, read the paper and do a few household chores. Soon the day was gone and I had not accomplished my goal. I decided to work on my goal first and then reward myself with exercise and other things that I wanted to do. It was just a matter of rearranging my tasks. I still found it difficult to get started. I used the idea of a leading task. I would just sit at the computer, fill my head with ideas and start to write. Then I would refine the writing the next day. Within 6 months I had the first draft of the text written. Today it is used in about 60 colleges across the country. This new edition of College and Career Success online is my latest project.

Ok, I have shared one of my goals and how I accomplished it. Now it is your turn. Tell about something you accomplished in the past or something you hope to accomplish in the future. See if you can use some of the time management ideas in the text.  Then read another student's comment and add your comments, questions or add your encouragement.

  1. One of my main goals in life is to accomplish my bachelors degree in electrical engineering and have a very successful career after graduation. My time management techniques I was, still and will be using to accomplish this goal of mine is to be always in time and always have my work done early and professionally. I will also work very hard to get the best experience out of myself trying to reach my goal and trying to enjoy the way to reaching my goals as much as possible in order to keep myself motivated. If I ever face obstacles like I had before, I will always turn to my friends and get back to the right track.

    1. Marln, your goal is an awesome choice and engineering is very important to the community as well as an amazing career to become successful with. I like how you're so motivated to accomplish this goal and that's an important step you must take to continue this track. It seems you are on the right track, knowing that you need to get your work done early, because it's important not to procrastinate with a rigorous profession like engineering. Best of luck to you!

    2. Hi Marlin
I like your choice also I like your major. It's so important to be an engineer in the community. I recommend to show the people that you worked so hard until you get the degree, and studied so hard to do well in tests and exams. you should be proud of yourself. Also, your parents should be proud of their son. Keep it up, and try hard to go over everything that could make you down.

  2. Hello everyone. One of my main lifetime goals is to obtain a masters in Nursing and get a license to be a Nurse practitioner. With that I am thinking about specializing in a trauma intensive care unit. For those of you who know what a trauma unit and an ICU looks like, only imagine the two of them combined!! Sounds crazy but that's what I strive for everyday. I am very confident in myself to achieve this goal, yet it will take many steps and tasks to accomplish it. I manage my time by getting my homework done early and at least on time because this is a step to being professional. You can't be late to work, especially when it's time to handle to needs of a patient. Second, I value my time into working at the hospital, getting the best experience I can get. I love working with staff and patients, and learning all kinds of new things. I am always spending my time and resources trying to find a better way to make my career happen. I will start off with a two year nursing program that will give me my bachelors degree in nursing. Following that, I will probably do the masters and the rest online while I am working so that I can flex my schedule to work study, and possible even have a family around then. Staying focused and positive, and living by the hour is what I am doing to manage my life.

    4. Hi Brandon,
When I read your paragraph, I like your major about getting a masters in nursing. In the past, I thought about this major, but I change it because I don't like to work in the hospitals and I can't see the patients, blood or injections, so I move to another major, but this major has a good career and a good future. You will get a very good future and my advice to you is keep going at this major and get a good degrees and good luck.

  3. Hello Everyone,

One of my lifetime goals is to purchase a home with my husband. For me to accomplish this goal, I started going to school and working towards my bachelors degree in child development. This will make me have a better career in life and be able to be financially stable and afford a loving home for my family. I know that having this goal makes me focused, determined and motivated in achieving it. Taking the first step of going to school was the hardest for me, since I have not been in school for more than 10 years. Now that I have, I know I can do it and reach any of my goals in life. I feel like I am unstoppable and I am on the right path to success.

  4. My lifetime goal is to have a successful job and to find what kind of job I will love. I only just recently decided on a major, but not into detail, which involves engineering. The way I want to accomplish getting a successful job is to first get the education it requires and to gain work experience. As a girl of 19-years-old, I find it difficult to get my first job because the people won't hire me for lack of experience. So far the school part is good, but the job part is a little discouraging. I am also someone who hates giving up based on what other people think, so I know that I can get a job as long as I don't give up.

Engineering is a great field to get into! I know that it might seem discouraging to find a job because of all the unemployment rates, but don't let that stop you. Once you can believe it, you can achieve it. Every single person who got to where they are today is from starting from the bottom and working your way up. We all have to start from somewhere. I do hope you find enough passion to pursue your dream and accomplish that job you have always wanted.

It is so hard to live in this country without having a degree and a job that better fits you and fits your needs, without a degree, we are nothing and we won't be, we will live on temporary job, moving from a job to another with getting paid well or even being happy with it. 11. Hello class,
My immediate goal is to finish my prerequisites for the nursing program and to obtain a degree in nursing. My goal in the nursing field is to be a labor and delivery nurse. I was in the Navy where I had the opportunity to work on the labor and delivery ward. In my opinion, there is nothing more rewarding than to help bring life into the world. Your face is one of the first faces a baby sees upon entering this world and the feeling is indescribable. Nursing school is very competitive so making sure I do well in all my classes is essential and vital for my success. I love to learn so after I get my degree in nursing I will probably pursue a master’s degree and if I have the time and resources maybe even get a doctorate degree. The feeling of self accomplishment is one of the greatest feelings in the world. Self accomplishment boost your self esteem and it motivates you to accomplish your goals. I believe that I can accomplish these goals and I will accomplish them!!

My lifetime goal is to be an electrical engineer. The obstacles I would face is having trouble understanding mathematics. Math is the hardest subject for me and I do not know how to begin liking math. I know tutoring will help me understand math easily or I can watch videos on youtube like I always do. I watch videos for any subject or chapter that I do not get. Specially word problems, never get how to solve them. I would manage my time and give my time and effort to my education and school grade.

There are also books at Barnes and Noble that have specialize subject areas you may need to perfect. Do not think mathematics will be an obstacle just put forward the effort in practicing and eventually you will accomplish your goal.

My lifetime goal is to be a marriage and family counselor/therapist. Growing up, I had always wanted to become a nurse. That was my dream, and up until collage I realized that being a nurse was just not for me. I have a passion for helping people, and I have always knew I wanted a career that not only would I love, but rewarding at the same time. In order to get to my lifetime goal, I have to acquire good time-management techniques. The most efficient technique that I can use to achieve my goal is to break it up into smaller steps and make deadlines for myself. The deadlines will help me get to my goal in a timely matter. Any obstacles that I might go through I will work around them because it is that important to me. This will help me accomplish my lifetime goal.

Since my job involve moving from one geographical location to another it can be difficult finding the right school to continue my degree. I will not let the obstacles hinder me from achieving my goal. The step I will take to combat this obstacle is to schedule an appointment to meet a counselor to get a degree plan. The degree will give me an idea of the classes I need to need. Also I will research the different accreditation bodies of different schools to see what classes can be transferred. I know that I have to do extra studying when I start classes in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics but that will not be a deterrent. I have been able to find tutoring online for the above mention subjects areas so that will not be much of a challenge after all.

And I want a nice home 4 bedroom 3 bathroom front and backyard and garage. The problem with this is money and credit. I want my family to be good off and I want my kids to have their room to come home to after they go off to college. I have to be making a minimum of 100,000 a year to be able to afford the home I want. I need to be a better saver and more focused which is hard for me to do at time. I also need to learn what goes into making this kind of money and what all goes into building my credit and buying a house. So outside of money learning the ends and out is another obstacle in the way for me aLong with finishing school because there is no way I will be making that kind of money with no one education.

I plan on achieving this goal by further developing and creating new time management techniques. I also manage my time by creating weekly schedules and if needed daily schedules to increase my efficiency. I have been active in my road to achieve this goal by finishing up my G.E courses and prerequisites so I can transfer soon and obtain my bachelor’s degree in biology. Getting this far has Taken a tremendous amount of studying and prioritizing my life but it has been very beneficial to my education and extracurricular. After obtaining my B.S. I want to help others feel better about their bodies. Of course, this is no easy career and it is going to take a lot of time and hard work to achieve. The only way I can succeed in achieving this goal would have to be by using time management techniques. I put school before my social life. I get my work done first and hang out with friends and family after. I also make a schedule for myself everyday. This helps me complete everything I want to do. I always follow my schedule and I never cram things in one day. I take things slowly and manage to complete school work on time. 1. I find your goal to be very admirable. To own your own home, is a huge achievement in this day and age. The use of a budget and a list of priorities is a great way to make that happen. Also, don't be afraid to try and find out what it would cost to live in the area that you want to live in. This would allow for you to figure out, how much you would need to save in order to buy that house.

  25. Hello Everyone,
I will share with you one my lifetime goals and how this chapter will help to accomplish it. One of my lifetime goals is to purchase a home by the end of this year and propose to my girlfriend. Another of my lifetime goals is to obtain a masters degree in Public Administration. At first for me to accomplish this goal was a dream but as I complete my courses every semester I see my future closer. I started going to school and working towards my bachelor’s degree in Public administration a year ago when I enrolled in Cuyamaca College. I want to be a director for a public agency, and in order to accomplish this I need to avoid procrastination and always stay focused.

  26. My lifetime goal was to be an engineer because I dreamed about it and I’d like to achieve it. Then I got a certificate in engineering when I was in Iraq but when I left my country I couldn’t work here only if I study it all over again. I decided to come to collee and study to make my dream come true. I found myself distracted by things such as work. I would get up in the morning and go to college after getting aplenty of time to sleep, make myself a cup of coffee and head to college. After that I get home and eat or sometimes I go to the gym and then come home. I decided to work on my goal first and then reward myself with hanging out with my friends. It was just a matter of time.

  27. My biggest lifetime goal is to be stable and successful in my life. I want to be a medical social worker and also be able to help when it comes to counseling. This all stems from the hard life I've lived. In order to achieve this, I will need to put together a plan that has a specific time frame. I cannot allow for procrastination to occur and deter me from making this happen. I want to have stability in my future and for my future children.

  28. My lifetime goal was to be a teacher I dreamed about it and I’d like to achieve it. I didn’t have a chance to go to school in my country because it wasn’t safe so when I came here to the United States of America I decided to study and achieve my dream about being a teacher. The reason I want to be a teacher is that I like to teach little kids and educate them plus I love children. I also go to Madison elementary school and volunteer there to build my experience and have more information about teaching. Hopefully I will be able to achieve my goal.

  29. I would have to say that my biggest or most imporant lifetime goal is getting a degree, that is in Biology. This has been my goal since I started thinking about my future and how I really wanted to spend my life doing something that I love with a degree that would take me there. I plan on accomplishing this goal by always remembering what is most important and always putting school before the fun. I will try to keep myself motivated by always keeping in my mind that it will all be worth it soon.

  30. One of my lifetime goals is to live in a house or apartment, depending on where I am in life and my age, my the beach. I have always dreamed about living closer to the beach since I was little, growing up in San Diego does that to you. Living by the coast is more expensive than practically anywhere else so I will need to budget for it. I need to stay focused in not only my school work but my career path as well. I need to maintain a good paying job while I am in school to help prepare me with skills that I will need for when I graduate college and can hopefully find a career more suited to my studies. I know that I won't be able to have the kind of lifestyle I want while living by the beach if I don't have a good paying job so this also helps me stay motivated in school.

  35. One of my lifetime goals is to graduate college with a bachelor's degree in a career that I am not sure on. I want to have a job that is fun and pays very well. I think I want to do something in sports but I do not know exactly what I want to do with my career. Time management techniques I will use include paying attention in class and studying a lot to prepare for the tests. I will make sure to attend every class so I do not fall behind in my work. I will try my hardest to complete all the homework because that is the biggest thing when you are trying to pass a class. The obstacles that I will deal with is when the work is really hard and I do not know how to do it. I will deal with this by asking for help with tutors and my teachers. Tutors help a lot and I will take advantage of their support. Another obstacle is that if their is too much work or that if I do not have time to finish something. I will deal with this by doing my work early so I do not have to deal with time management problems.

  36. One of my lifetime goals I would like to accomplish would be to purchase a home. Having a growing family and seeing how rent is sometimes so much more expensive, I am coming to realize I want my family to have a stable home. I do not find anything wrong with renting but after extensive research, I have come to find out that rent can be more expensive than owning. In order to complete this goal,I need to start saving money and better my credit. To start saving I will start a budget and then make a list of where money goes to. Then I will cut off any unnecessary expenses. Some obstacles I may have would be the cost of living here in San Diego, in addition to me not working at the moment. In order to overcome these obstacles I will look for a part-time job to help my husband and as previously said, cut any unnecessary cost.

I plan to achieve this by working hard in school and work like I have been. I think in the world we live in now it is crucial to have some sort of college degree to make what you would really like to most times. Also having a steady job even at a younger age will look much better for career opportunities down the road as well as possibly progressing into further positions at the job you already have. A steady paying job and saving over time can make this goal achievable, along with owning a race car and vacation homes all around the world. 42. My most prominent lifetime goal is becoming a criminalist and specializing in blood spatter and ballistics. I will use my time management techniques to accomplish this by prioritizing my schooling, work, family, personal relationships, and recreational time. A majority of semesters I work and go to school full time. Therefore, my family and friends are aware that there are a lot of functions I have to miss out on and they support me entirely. Thus far, I have successfully accomplished completing my Associates of Science degree in forensics; I am currently faced with an obstacle of finding a 4-year university to attend to complete my Bachelors of Science in Chemistry or Biology to be qualified for a criminalist position. This is an obstacle because I will be moving soon to take a Forensic job in Orange County, I have to find a place to leave and new college to attend. I will deal with this by approaching the big task one step at a time and not becoming overwhelmed with the big picture. By taking this transition little by little it elevates the overload and stress.
